Any reason to keep compound miter saw after getting TS55/1080MFT?

Well, subject says it all.  I have the TS55 and the MFT1080.  Do I need to keep my miter saw for anything?  Since I got the MFT1080 I have not used it.  I know you say sell it then.  I have this fear if I sell it I will need it for something!  So, has anyone wished they had their miter saw back?  Mine is a 12" non-slide with the MSUV.  I figure I could get 250-300 for the set up and use that for more Festools.
Thanks for the advice,
Tim

Like you, I have a single MFT.  It's been very convenient to use the sliding compound miter saw for crosscuts when the MFT is tied up doing something else.

Most of the time the miter saw has either a non-ferrous metal or plastic-cutting blade mounted.

Could I make do without it?  Sure, but I have one and it's more use to me than the price I'd get if I sold it.

Tim, I don't like to use the MFT for miter cuts at all and for that matter angles cuts too. The current miter head on the MFT 1080/800 isn't very accurate. When I want to make an angle cut on my MFT I move the work piece not the fence. For miter cuts, meaning a cut to form a joint, like molding, I wouldn't ever use the MFT. If you for see doing trim in your future, keep the miter saw, if not sell it. The upshot of selling your miter saw is when you need one again you'll have a good excuse to buy a Kapex.

Hi,

I have a 12" non slider also. I can't imagine the MFT completely taking its place. Yes, the MFT can do the job. But the miter saw is quicker and more convenient for many cross cutting tasks.  There is no way I would want to do house trim (moldings and such), or cut up framing lumber with the MFT instead.
However it depend s a lot on what you will be doing. And to some extent on what other tools you have. EX - if you need to cut some 2x once in a while and have a regular circular saw then maybe the miter saw becomes less important.  You say you havn't used since you got the MFT / TS55. So maybe for what you do it would  not be worth keeping. It is a hard question fror anyone else to give a definetive answer on.

ALWAYS square cuts (bump my MFT and it's get out the square time), convenience, easy miters, depth of cut, power...

I am pretty much a minimalist when it comes to tools. Buy quality and only what you need.

When I got my MFT I thought the miter saw would collect dust but after using the MFT with a TS55 for some miter cuts their was no way I'd sell of my Makita miter saw as it is way quicker and more accurate. The TS55 and MFT are great tools but don't replace a miter saw.

I guess Festool felt the same way and invented the KAPEX so sell off your existing miter saw, try the TS 55 and MFT combo and then convince yourself you need the KAPEX!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D

Maybe that was Festool's plan all along!!  Incrementally draw customers onto the Slippery Slope.  Maybe an impact will be in those plans.  I'm just a hobbyist, but I am keeping my cheapo (Hitachi) CMS, because it is light, very compact, very portable, and quickly set to any angle I want.  And 90 degrees is 90 degrees whenever I want to go back to it.  I see it as a complement to the MFT.  If I had to rebuild the railing on my deck, I'd probably carry the MFT onto the deck and set the CMS on the MFT and cut away because it would be much faster for making the many repeat cross cuts than placing one of more boards at a time onto the MFT under its Guide Rail.  I should warn you that I also endorse keeping a traditional table saw if you can afford it and have the space for it.  In other words, I view Festool's products as a core tool system, but not the best for everything.

Sorry, you are going to have to wait a little longer, release is 7/1/08. Festool may have the Kapex micro site up by 5/1. Do a search here we have a number of good threads on the subject.
