Anyone have pics where they use Kaizen foam for handplane storage?

I've got a nice wide drawer I'd like to repurpose for handplane storage.

Not sure what thickness to get and if its better to store them on their side or sitting upright in the foam. My shallowest plane would be a block plane or shoulder plane if  on the side, and the biggest plane a veritas #6 fore plane with a few others in between.

thnx

This is what I did using Black-White-Black Kaizen foam.  The Drawer is about 3 1/2" deep.

The foam is 1 1/2 thick

The drawer is on full extension slides

I lined the bottom in black rubber tool liner from Big Box Store

While I think the foam is a great product but eventually foam betrays you and sticks to everything.:(

nice idea with the tool liner, I have some cork board material I might use instead.

Figures that Rockler free shipping event is temporarily over. I'll wait for the next one to order 1 of each size to experiment with.

I don't use it for hand planes, but have put it in the bottom of my workbench drawers and another set of storage drawers for storage of chisels, precision measuring tools (some digital gauges), and other tools I don't want to be damaged by bumping against each other. It's great. Doesn't stick to anything as far as I know. It's not that kind of foam. It's easy to cut and, if you want to be really neat about it, you can use heated tools to either cut it or make the edges of the cuts neater. I didn't do that and I'm very happy with it. I bought the 1 1/4" thickness, 2-color (white sandwiched between black). The white color makes it a little easier to find where you are supposed to put things, but really not all that important. It's a great liner for drawer bottoms and can be separated into thinner layers (or you can buy the thinner stuff) if you just want a liner. It cuts on regular saws and I even "resawed" it on my band saw to make it thinner. You can buy it from FastCap or I think Woodcraft or Rockler has it now.

I love the stuff!  But I keep my planes out on shelf.

Here was my last project with Kaizen

I know someone who works at a gun store. They bought a foam-cutter to do custom cutouts in pieces of closed cell foam. Considering how fussy owners of expensive guns can be I think that could be a good way for tool owners to go.

I think I'd store the planes on their sides. One thing, though, if no one else has already said it, I found it's best to cut the foam slightly smaller than the outline of the tool. They just fit better and more snugly in their place.
