Makita just dropped this a few months ago, looks like a monster for not being much larger than your standard drill (and not being an SDS).

I just had the same experience a few months ago. Using a standard DeWalt 20v drill and cheapo Skil brand masonry bits. I went thru 3 bits drilling about 30 holes. I got an 18v Milwaukee hammer drill recently and tried it in the same brick just for the heck of it... night and day difference. Hammer drill is the way to go.... I drilled 3 holes in no time and the bit showed no signs of dulling like before.

In the uk all tradesmen have an sds drill and use it on most days. For bigger stuff an sds max drill would be used.

Not a fan of the smaller multi material screws at all. They snap in hard brick and dont hold in block. I use the 7.5mm (6.5mm hole) for window fitting but its plstice plugs mostly or steel wedge anchors for mf construction

I drill into concrete using a Makita SDS rotary hammer drill, electric.  Bosch SDS bits.  Most of my drilling is for attaching outlet boxes and conduit to concrete.  I've also used hammer drills and the Tapcon bits.  There is no comparison.

Just curious, what's most used/common in the UK for dust abatement while using a SDS? Is it that sausage looking tube? Or those vac-on shrouds like Bosch has (and Festool as well, but in a smaller size)?

Dust control here in the US is still a luxury and not a requirement, unfortunately.

+1 to using an SDS Rotary Hammer / SDS bits rather than one of those wimpy hammer drills...

Particularly if you are making holes that are really big like 1.25 inch - I'm surprised if anyone would even make hammer drill bits that large.  One would think them to not be very useful.
