The fence post I'm sitting on is starting to hurt. A little while back I got my wife a really jazzed up A1 and just did the common boring thing and picked out an average A4 for myself. The A4 is a brilliant car to drive and does everything very well ... but it's a boring white sedan [sad]

The little voice on my shoulder that normally keeps telling my to buy new Festools is now telling me to buy an RS Q3 with all the options ... telling me it's a practical small SUV, but also fun [smile]

The A4's only got 23K on the clock (kms) and it's virtually new, Damn those Germans [mad] [mad] [mad]

Opinions valued.

Kev.

Either get a real Range Rover for real offroading or then go properly sporty with a two seater sports car like a Porche Cayman S if you want fun. For everyting else your Audi is plenty good for.

[size=14pt]Kev Oh Kev, I have to agree with Reiska.

Do you want a boulevard 4wd or something real from Range Rover or Toyota? After all you live in Australia.  [big grin]

If not get a Porsche or something else exotic and fun for cruising Sydney and the north and south coasts. After all you seem to be able to lease/afford it!  [smile]

Personally I would purchase a Merc or BMW before an Audi. If only!  [eek]  [popcorn] [popcorn] [popcorn]

On a second tought, if you need more passenger space than two you could also derive a lot of fun out of a Tesla model S... 0-100 in 4.2s and doing it ecologically on electricity at the same time. [big grin]

Really simple, if you can only get 1 car here, get a Macan Turbo.  It puts the SQ5 and SQ3 to shame.  We dont have the RS version of those cars here, so I'm not 110% sure on their specs.  The Macan offers significantly more aggressive styling and it's a practically 80% ground up effort of Porsche engineering.  It's not just a Porsche badge slapped on the Q5 platform.  It also should be a tad larger than the RSQ3 allowing for some utilitarian useage, but I'd presume it'll still be quicker, better handling, etc.  And it's a Porsche, not an Audi.  That's a whole other world.

But, I'd love some links or educartion on the RSQ3.  Who knows, I may be wrong, wish that car was here.  Really, I wish the RS4 Avant was here.  I'd drop everything for that car in a heart beat.

Ah, just found the specs.  Macan is almost a second faster with all the trimmings and an almost near 100 hp extra.  I'd presume lighter too.

Unsure about costs down under.  That could be a serious deal breaker.  But I also think you guys have a few more Macan versions than we do at the moment.

Go for the Audi Kev, they are stunning.

Got a link to the one you are thinking about ?  I seen one in the supermarket carpark the other week, i literally stopped to have a look.
On another note, had a shot of my mates Lamborgini the other night  [scared] [scared] [scared] [scared] [scared] Now thats a car !!!

Mmmmh, Supercars... Lovely beasts even thou never got to try a Lambo... Closest that I've gotten to something similar was when I got to have a go on friends Ferrari F430... Very sporty and nice  [thumbs up]

Though with our winter, I do think that my m8 was quite right in swapping it eventually for a Porsche 911 Carrera 4S, four wheel drive in snow is just so much better than trying to keep 490hp on the rear wheels only on the street  [scared]

Whatever you choose, make sure it's got cargo space for at least a few rolls of edgebanding. ;)

I've looked at Range Rovers, they're too big! I do like the old ones and would consider an old one as a project .. but not a daily driver.

Small sporty SUV is the size target, it's not intended for any serious off road - been there, done that, got the pics [wink]

Mercedes and BMW don't have a high performance SUV in the Oz marketplace and the coming Mercedes AMG GLA45 is cramped for headroom anyway (I'm a 7 foot person with a 4 foot person's legs). The BMW X4 is also coming, but I think they're ugly with a big fat rear end.

The Porsche Macam is a stunner! Spec'd to my liking works out about twice the price of the RSQ3 .. and it is a bigger car.

Going with the SQ5 and getting the ABT performance upgrade was also in my thinking .. 700Nm of torque would pull the odd stump out of the ground! But that's more spend and diesel too!

Use wise I do metro commuting and weekends see a SUP or an ocean ski on the roof or a bike in the back, so the Q3 form factor is as small as I'd go.

The mug lair side of me is also pondering a dual cab 4x4 and a hot hatch combo instead of a one car fits all .. but you end up never being in the right one. Another journey I've been along in the past!

The Audi RS4 would probably be my choice if $'s were ignored and an S4 Avant would probably be the most "grown up" choice of all the applicable Audi models ... and if I start to go down that path it opens the door on dozens of other sensible choices.

I keep circling back to the RSQ3 as a fun small fast SUV with some quality and styling. I am a bit naffed that it's 2.5 turbo is effectively detuned by 37Kw from the TTRS plus guise and I can't see a real justification. With the AMG GLA45 coming the obvious result will be turning up the wick on the next model [sad]

Urghh!

Interesting...as I read this I kept thinking "why doesn't he get an S4 Avant or RS4 Avant?".  They should offer a little more utility compared to a Q3, but I've not seen the Q3 in person, only the Q5, which I found disappointingly small. Perhaps I'm a little bit seduced by the NAINA factor of the RS4's too. Like Sean, I would sell every last Festool for one (did he say that or was that just my interpretation?)! :P  Alas, I keep my A4 avant alive (last of the manuals they brought over to the US) until that day arrives!  But you, you have access to such a gem and if I'm allowed to suggest how you spend your money, well, there ya go! :)

Very nice Sean!  I think the current owner of your car posts on quattroworld!  Yes, they have all grown a bit porky (not unlike myself) which hasn't helped with that front end push. I took mine down to NJMP once shortly after I acquired it and that push was enough to take the fun out of it (unless I wanted to burn up my front tires).  I vowed to leave the suspension in this one alone after having tinkered endlessly with my previous Audi's. Still makes a great grocery getter while still allowing me to drive a manual.  And it has enough utility that I can still avoid buying an SUV. I hope Audi (or somebody else) will resume importing MT wagons to the US again.

Another option that comes to mind is the 3 series wagon with the 2 liter turbo. Unfortunately I priced one out with all the goodies (M brakes, sport pkg, blah blah blah) and laughed at the sticker ($60kish). Price aside, nice combination of fun, looks and thriftiness if that's a word.

Find an old Lamborghini LM002 and have the best of both worlds; a 4WD, off-road supercar [big grin]

About 30 Years ago I was working in Morocco and drove a LWB, diesel Land Rover.  The suspension was so stiff I thought I needed a kidney transplant when I was done. [smile]

OK ... close to a decision now ...

I was a bit miffed that the RSQ3 motor was slightly detuned from it's engine donor - the TTRS Plus. It's short 37Kw from the TTRS Plus install. Research has found an option to "chip up" the RSQ3 with a additional ECU that takes it up to 301Kw and 530Nm (from 420Nm) .. all warranted by ABT for 100,000Km.

I don't actually need the extra power, but it's nice to know that I can have it if I want it - plus much more!

So close ... [smile]
