Audio Equipment Rack (Updated, new pics)

Woodworking and High End Audio are both hobbies of mine and it's fun to mix them together.  First off this is still a work in progress, I need one more shelf and I ran out of Maple.  The unit is stackable, each shelf unit can be removed and replaced with a taller or shorter unit.

The horizontal pieces are quilted maple and the vertical legs are cherry.  The actual shelf is mdf which will be painted black.

The top of each leg has a receiver disc for the spiked cone on the bottom of each leg.  The receivers are just sitting in a recess, drilled with a forstner bit.  The bottom of each leg has a 1/4 20 threaded insert for the spikes to thread into.  Since the spikes are threaded, each shelf can be adjusted for level.

The frame work for each shelf is glued and pocket hole screwed together.  Each rail has a 1/4" wide 1/4" deep grove cut into it for corner braces.  Yes I know it would have been better with a Domino at these points but I don't have one yet.

I hope to have the shelves painted black soon and get some more maple so I can build one more layer.

JMB thanks.  The spikes are sold as "feet" for speakers, I got them from www.parts-express.com , they are $18.00 for a set of 4.  I also ordered some bright green expandable sleeving from them for my Festool vac hose.

Have you considered a small support up the back for added tip-over prevention? It could also double as a raceway for the cables.

Actually the unit is not finished yet so yes there are still markings showing.  I hope to spray the finish in another week or so, I'm waiting on more maple so I can make one more shelf.

Yes there will be some tubes in that rack, my pre-amp, which I made, is a tube unit.  And there will be a turntable, which I also made, will be on top.  Tubes and vinyl rule.  [big grin]

That looks cool. I saw this type of A/V rack advertised in a HiFi A/V magazine about a month ago and thought I'd make something like that. Just not got round to making it yet.

The one advertised had wheels for the base shelf.

Does anyone know if those spike things and the sockets are available in the UK?

I'm using clear shellac on the maple and cherry.  The mdf shelves were primed with Killz using a texture roller then spray painted satin black, Krylon.
