Bad Festool Dealers?

I have purchased from Bob Marino and referred people to him that I know purchased things as well.  I live in Chicago and can understand "Brooklyneese" pretty well.
The no-tax and free shipping are the reason I buy Festool from him and ONLY him, but the service and knowledge is unparalleled as well, and that is good enough for me.
Buy from him with confidence.

There are so many sources here in the US for Festool products now. With pricing identical, the only reason to select a provider is communication and service. I loved it when Festool was a niche product and not really known and was sold by individuals with a very personnal stake in selling and service. Now with virtually every catalog sales company showing Festool - Woodcraft, Rockler, Highland, Garret Wade, McFeely's, ect - the uniqueness is disappearing. I got sucked in by Uncle Bob a few years ago and have stayed. He cares about his customers, stays on top of orders, ships from his personnal stock at times, does follow-up calls and emails, always returns calls, puts up with my picking on him  ;D. I am sure there are other high quality guys/gals like him. I have been into Rockler and Woodcraft in Houston and it just isn't a good way to sell this product line - actually a terrible way for Festool to do business. They don't present them well, don't recommend them, don't offer to demonstrate them. I have watched people look at them and no-one in sales comes up and offers any assistance. I bet McFeelys does a really superb job but they have no stores around here. Sure wish they did as we have no woodworking businesses in Louisiana.

Lately, you have acted almost human.  Have you been using finer grit sandpaper on that woodenhead? ::)

Another very short story:

When I was in Korea (my vacation in the orient), my two best buddies were quite far removed geographically.  I, of course, was the Yankee, being from the hills of Southwestern Mass and then from Southern Connecticut.  Basically your normal (no comments please) fast talking sort.  My other buddy from stateside was Smitty, from Albany, Georgia, and a slow, almost musical talker.  The third in the trio was Kim, a korean seargent who was very highly educated.  He could talk in 11 different languages and could write in seven of those.

The three of us often got into some rather heated (but good natured) discussions, especially when our vocal chords became quite well lubricated.  At times, Kim would butt in with, "Doc, (i was a medic in those days), you have to slow down.  Smitty, i can understand because he speaks nice  and  s l o w.  You, I can't undrstand because you all time go yabittyyabityyab."

most of the time, he did understand.  I do wonder how he would have done with Bob and his Brooklynese messed up with his Jersey misplaced accent.  ??? ::) ;D

You think Bob's talking is fast?

He returned my call today before I finished leaving him the callback number!

You think that's bad? People down here keep asking if I'm Canadian!

(no offense fellas, some of the best American comics are from Canada  ;D ;D ;D )

Chalk up more points for Bob, does everyone realize the thread started by talking about bad dealers and has gravitated to how good Bob is?

Yeah, it's true. I wonder how many times Bob has dragged his wife over to the computer to read all the nice things we say about him.  ;D

Maybe, maybe not. He has posted several other times with some typical newbie questions.  Agreed, a rant is probably not the best way to get acquainted with your new friends, but giving him the benefit of the doubt, I'm not so sure this was intended to be a stink bomb.

bad festool dealers rubbish. being a customer is an art. you simply dont cross the threshold of bad dealers, you can suss them in seconds and leave the shop for ever

this is MY way of doing things, it works for me

dont touch small dealers with a barge poll they dont carry stock so you cant do the touch feely thing with two or three models and makes, they have little knowledge and dont do deals

use one dealer for all your tools, get to know the local festool rep as well

i go to one of the largest in the area in Leyton (NE London) they have staff dedicated to only one brand and, i buy all my tools from them

i know its a shock to some of you green bloods but festool dont make lamello cantex's or makita impact drills

this approach gets me what i want when i want it and at the best price avaliable, stock is put aside for me and i dont need to ask for discount i get it automatically

because i know my festool rep ive borrowed tools on apro from the importers and even collected tools direct from the importers with just a signature

bad dealers do exist but youve got to learn the art of being a good customer

I take it you aren't talking about this dealer? ;D

Wrong.........  their service is diabolical and they treat their customers with total contempt .

Are Festool interested, are they hell, they couldn't give a flying stuff.

I talked to the area rep, to get the problem resolved. it took him 3 weeks and apparently 4 emails before he got a single reply from Germany.

All they did was confirm it wasn't accurate and they are going to do nothing about it.

By the way the rep was reminded not to tell me the tool is inaccurate.

How stupid do Festool think their customers are?

For the record, my small dealer will order anything I want to see, just so we can both have a play with it. I can demo any tool for any reasonable amount of time, I've had him deliver a demo tool to my jobsite on half a day's notice. Free delivery on any order over $250.00 We have good communication about how things perform in the real world, which would save me a lot of money if I wasn't hopelessly addicted to buying tools 'I might have a need for in the future'.

I am not trying to rub anyone the wrong way.  That is why I didn't name any names.  Well except Bob, and only then to say he talks faster than I listen.  Which is not a bad reflection on Bob.

I really don't mean to offend.  No grenade or stink bomb intended.

The local Seattle Woodcraft store is very knowledgeable about Festool and I bought my tools from them. However, I took my brother into the Orlando Woodcraft store and they didn't know squat. I suggested he buy his Rotex from Brother Bob (whom I've never bought anything from--yet) and he did and was quite happy. But I wouldn't condemn all Woodcrafts--like many things, some are good, some aren't.

Ken,

No offense taken on my part, not even a little and you happen to be correct - I may at times speak a wee bit fast, especially must sound that way to those down South!

I don't agree wholy with DD, but I do have another story to illustrate his point.  (I'm a small town guy who appreciates small town operators trying to get ahead.  I'll stick with somebody like Bob>fast talking and all.)

A few years ago, i was looking for a cullinary knife set for my SIL.  He is a gourmee chef, not by trade, but mere enjoyment.  There was a new culinary store on mainstreet in my town and i decided, since i like to trade locally whenever possible, I would give them a try.  It was a week or so before Christmas and parking spaces were VERY difficult to find, especially when driving a truck.

I had planned to go home and then return to make my purchase.  It just so happened that a space capable of fitting my dump truck just happened to open up and i took quick advantage of the situation.  Since I was still on my way home from work, i was still in my work clothes.

I walked into the store and the girl behind the main counter took one look at me and disappeared into a back room.  i waited a few minutes and finally went over to the cabinet where I noticed the best quality knives were kept.  Immediately behind that counter was another room.  I moved around the cabinet to see if anybody was around to help me.  There were two women sitting in a couple of chairs just chatting.  i said nothing, but stood in the doorway for another minute or two and decided those two "ladies" were not counter people.  I then went to the other doorway where the first woman had previously disappeared thru.  There were three women sitting around a small table sipping coffe (or whatever) and just chatting.  Again, i stood there, saying nothing.  I decided they were on their break and did not really care if i bought anything or not.  They were not going to move for anybody, especially a working guy who looked like he could not possibly be interrested in anything to do with gourmee until they were finished resting, or whatever.

I went back out to the knife cabinet and started looking the wares over.  after five or more minutes, still nobody came out to help or even sell, but i discovered the cabinet was not locked.  I decided to make closer inspection and started removing knives and laying them out on the side counter.

Still no service.  My orneriness just took over completely, and i finally unloaded the cabinet, scattering knives in unrelated order over two counters.  Still nobody came out, so i left. ::)

A half hour later, still in my same dirty workclothes, i entered Williams & Sonoma in the mall at Danbury.  AS soon as i was in the door, a very nice lady came up to me and asked if she could help.  i told her what i was looking for and she took me to another lady who was in charge of that area.  I quickly decided on the knife set I wanted and that lady went looking for the correct package.  she came back to tell me she could not find what i wanted but would check with the manager.  the manager came and spoke with me and the two ladies disappeared, only to return after five minutes or so with the correct package.

that home town store eventually went out of business stating "poor customer base" as a reason.  I suspect i was not the only person to have been so snubbed, but i never went near that place again.

No, it is not my habit to go to the big stores first unless i cannot find what I want locally, but once in a while, things just line up a little differently.

Hi,

I can fully appreciate KennyR getting bad dealer.  There are good and bad dealers in every brand, and business even Festool (though probably fewer). I have had this type of experience more than once. And ,like others have stated, the bad dealers simply don't get my business.
There is an excellent (sort of Festool like) lawn mower company out there.  They have a dealer 4 miles from my house. On a scale of 1 - 10 he is about a two. I and many other locals have had numerous, first hand , bad experiences in almost every aspect of  business.  The brand also has a dealer 35 miles from my house. That dealer is about 11 on a scale of 1 - 10. Always going the extra mile in every aspect of business.  Guess where I and the other locals GO?  I am not always asking for 11s but a few more 7s or 8s would be nice.

Seth

Unfortunatly, I have a bad dealer story.  Or ordered a MFT 800 from Rockler last week, it was the full system with the guide.  Today I got the basic table, no rails or fence.  Okay, they sent the wrong one.
I called their customer service and dealt with people that don't know the products and were asking me what parts i'm missing from the diagram, which was a lot.  They don't have an in stock anymore, so they said I was stuck with what I had.  They didn't even acknolege there was a problem.  They are reluctantly sending me a paid return slip to send it back, and i can't return it at a store.

I only bought from them because they had it in stock and will not deal with them again.  I'll be waiting to hear from them saying there are parts missing when they get it back...well yeah, that was the problem.

Sorry for venting, but that was a frustrating day.
