Here's a bar top in various stages, built in Sipo and stained in dark walnut (because that is what the customer wanter) and topped with regular minwax fast drying poly.

We showed up to install this bar top and got many 'oohs and ahhs' from the customer. They absolutely loved it until we put it in place. Then the Mrs. said "absolutely not!" wrote us the check for the balance due and asked "Can you do it again in maple to color match the cabinets and at 3/4" thick instead of 1 3/4" ?"

So, here we go again..... in maple ;D

Tomorrow we hope to install the maple version. Before we do, our plan is to set the Sipo one, snap a few photos. Then install the maple one. Or who knows, maybe not. For what we are getting for these things I have NO issue with making for her as many as she likes ;D

Good stuff Harry.  Nice to see some of your work.  Hopefully she hates the maple one and wants a walnut or iroko top instead.  Question: do youn get to keep the sipo top?

No. They paid for it, it's theirs. The story is they want me to cut the narrow leg off for use as a shelf. The main slab will presumably go in the same room as the shelf as some sort of makeshift counter top. We'll see what happens.

The real problem here is that there is a designer involved. The bar area was spec'd out at 48" high plus the bar top. The home owner felt that it all was too high (and I happen to agree). The designer thinks/believes that the thinner top stain matched to the cabinets will make it look less 'imposing'. How 'visually less imposing' makes everything factually shorter is beyond me, but whatever.

I know already that I will be making another trip down there, aside from tomorrow (still waiting for some panels to come in). I think I will see if I can defer modifying the Sipo top until then. It is SO much more beautiful to look at than the maple one. Not that there is anything wrong with the maple one....

It is my hope that given some time with the maple one she will decide to do what she wanted to do in the first place. That being, reduce the height down to 40-44" plus the Sipo top. I'll get some pictures tomorrow so you all can see what exactly I mean.

I hate designers.... Most of them are self taught and have no idea in what's involved in building those fantasies they have  [eek]  This was another reason for closing my shop.

Good luck with your install tomorrow!
