Years ago, I had a customer (Enclume) who manufactured pot racks. We made the single hooks and double hooks for them in low carbon steel. They wanted a no-finish look but with some corrosion resistance.
It was intended to look like a blacksmith made it.
We would send them the hooks with just the mill oil on them. They would then clean the oil off and apply their “special finish”.
I visited the factory in California once and the “special finish” was Beacon Floor Wax, which they bought from retail store (maybe Walmart or Kmart).

They used the Beacon Floor Wax as a finish for as long as they were our customer (circa 1980 - 1990). Maybe longer, I left the company in 1990. Beacon, as I understand it was just a water borne acrylic coating. I don’t think I have seen Beacon products lately, and it was too shiny to make anyone happy. But Enclume used it for at least 10 years.
