Basic Dust Extraction system

I need to do something better about sawdust cleanup/containment.  It might just be cleanup and I don't want/need a elaborate system.

I have a CT22 and obviously cant vacuum everything up or my bag would be full in no time.

So I bought a Dust Deputy. The one that is built for the Festool and will probably use it with the router (OF1400 and router table) since that's were most my mess comes from. The table saw pretty much drops it straight down and easy clean up. The big use will be cleaning up the MFT and floor.

So wondering if anyone has made a small system with blast gates and maybe a couple hoses coming off it.  Just looking to expand off the CT22 and Dust Deputy slightly.

Also Festool hose is kinda pricey and was thinking about getting one about 20' long and don't want to break the bank. Does anyone use other hose like what Rockler sells?

Thanks in advance. Just looking for ideas.

I know that other brands of hose fit Festool -- Bosch sells some anti-static hose (check Amazon) for less than that the Festool hose.  Fein also works.  I have always used the Festool hose although I had an old Fein that went out and I kept that hose to use for rougher work.  It is not an anti-static hose but works with my CT.  Not sure on blast gates -- Festool carries them now for the Planex set-up.  Others might be able to weigh in on using them.

I had the same need.  Couldn't justify the floorspace and cost of dust collector.  But I needed more than CT26 at festools.

I have a small shop vac on a switch at my table saw that does ok (I put the shop vac drywall bag and their HEPA filter in it).

Then I attached my large (13 gal) shop vac (drywall bag and HEPA filter too) to a dust deputy hooked up to a switching system (see photo, vacuum comes on when any tool is turned on, also have variable speed for vacuum if need) and 2 1/2 hose from woodcraft for my mitre saw, sander, router table, band saw and drill press.  Woodcraft had some 25' "kits" (with hose ends) for ~$25 that worked well.  Other fittings/blast gates add up so be careful  [big grin].  Only chore in system is making sure right gates are open/closed.

Between my CT26 cart (see photos) for festools and my 2 1/2" switched system (see photos) for other tools, I do OK.  This doesn't get everything but I don't sweep up too much and think I will live longer as a result.

I dont have a good photo of my dd at the 2 1/2 system right now as shop vac is being used to clean my pond  [big grin] which is what I bought it for but only really need it for that in spring.  So this 2 1/2" system did not cost me too much for new gear.

BTW I mounted my planer on a cart recently and simply move my DD and shop vac to it and it does really well.  Small DD bucket will be a problem with lots of planing but again, not much sweeping and lungs seem to appreciate it.....

Hope this helps with ideas.  Good luck.

OK so much for the attachment challenged.  ;D  Meant to post this photo versus 2 of the others....at least I think I have it right this time.... [sad]

Nope...one more time...ugh...  [eek]

Going for more coffee now....

signed the photo/attachment challenged.

Sorry but you now have what I meant to post in my first reply!

Thanks for the pics Hemlock. That gives me some food for thought.  Nice shop and I really like the cart.

I am hoping the dust deputy in itself will be a big help. I don't mind sucking stuff up as I go but I do a lot of router work and will be nice to have a hose connected to the router.

Home Depot sells a Ridgid kit for around $30 or $40 with several different fittings that will work with Festool. The hose is nice and flexible but I think it is only around 10'. Festool is nice because it is anti-static.

Wow, love that sandpaper storage!  Thanks for the idea, gotta see how that might work out in one of my shop-made cabinets.  Right now I've got the boxes in a drawer, which is OK.

Regards,

John

I have just posted a similar post to the original question by rrmccabe( bugger!). Like him I have a CT22. A 13 Gallon drum should give me about 3 times the storage capacity for dust collection(excluding the bag in the extractor itself). The size of the container must have some impact on the time to build up suction pressure. Not not sure how much [unsure]

Hemlock mentioned using a Dust Devil and shop vac to a bench planer.  I am trying to do the same thing but am having trouble finding adapters to step down from my Delta 12" bench planer dust outlet (4" diameter)  to the Festool antistatic hose that came with the CT 26.  I'm game to get a larger hose but will still need an adapter.  Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum!  [smile]

You should be able to find a 4" to 2" (2 1/4) adapter, then attach a 2" shop vac hose to handle the larger volume from the planer. A regular hose or the Festool D50  hoses should fit the adapter and will fit the Festool CT inlet.  Woodcraft an many other woodworking stores have them http://www.woodcraft.com/Product/2000899/2160/4-to-212-Reducer-Dust-Extraction-Fitting.aspx

I have made a system with a CT22, a DD, 3 blast gates and cheap 50 mm drain pipe. Each blast gate is made from 3/4" ply with an aluminium "shutter" (blast
gate
).

It works surprisingly well, the maximum pipe length is app. 4 m + the hoses in each end.

Thank you for the pictures. That is the most promising thing I have seen so far :)

I don't really need a big system. Just more convenience at more locations for use !

Many thanks for the lead on the 4" adapter, Seth, and the inspirational photos, Hemlock and Anders K.  I'm on my way to a solution!

Axminster here in the UK do a nice 'small' Dust Extraction Kit with pipe, connectors, blast gates, etc. The individual parts are also available separately so you can expand it/change it to suit your needs. Being 63mm diameter, I assume it will fit the festool hose ends, though I haven't seen it myself so can't confirm. Also, being clear it means you can instantly see blockages if/when they happen, plus I think it'd be cool to see dust and chippings whizzing through (maybe that's just me!).

I've thought about doing this in my small shop, but haven't yet, mainly because I still need everything to be able to be moved around. If I was using this, I'd add grounding wires to it so the anti-static hoses would still work. Better still, run a bare wire through the inside of the pipe - that would, I think, help stop static build-up on the inside of the pipe runs.

I'm sure you could find a similar kit over there?

I use this rig for drywall sanding, recipe is shop vac with HEPA filter and dust deputy strapped on a furniture dolly. It works quite well.
