Need some help with the basics of chucks and drills.

1. Centrotec  2. Jacobs or 3 jaw  3. hex Wire detent  4. hex Ball detent

What are pros and cons?  Which holds the bit the strongest? Which has the least runout?

What else is important to know?

What about for driving?

Well, here are a couple of my opinions:
1. Centrotec bits and chucks are far more stable and less susceptible to runout than any regular 1/4 inch quick release I've used. They are machined to tighter tolerances as far as I can tell.
2. The Jacobs chucks that have traditionally come with the Festool drills work, but tend to let gravity overcome them when pointed at the ground. (large bits wind up hitting the floor on occasion).
The new ratcheting chuck that comes with the T18 seems to be much better about this. I haven't had one fall out yet, but I'm not a heavy user and I haven't had it long.
3. I had a hard time getting used to putting 1 inch bits into the short centrotec chucks without them locking in, but I've gotten used to it over the years, and now that I think about it I'd guess that one time in fifty does the bit come out of the extension and stick in the screw. The magnets and/or wire indents in the extension hold the bits well. ( I'm not sure if there is a magnet). The one and only locking centrotec extension that I've owned fell apart after a month of heavy use, but I couldn't say that it is a common occurrence since I didn't bother to replace it.

There are a couple of thoughts for you, hope it help.
