I've managed to get myself confused.
Whilst I understand new charger (TRAC 3) will charge all types of battery; am unclear whether the new Li-ion batteries backwards compatible with older drills.
Clarification, with some explanation, would be appreciated.
Thanks very much, Richard.

The new Li-ion batteries are not backwards compatible with older drills.  The Li-ion batteries require special electronics to protect the batteries from over heating and over discharging.  The old drills don't have these special electronics.

Thanks very much Brice - your response quickly, and simply, put me right.
I think my confusion hinged around the fact that Li-ion batteries are available for my old DeWalt 18v kit - but, they do not have the latest monitoring electronics, which of course makes all the difference.
BTW, I enjoy reading your contributions to FOG.
A great site which has helped me no end understand Festool products, and, how to get the best out of them.
All the best, Richard.

I see our truce is over..... [tongue] [big grin] [big grin]

Sorry, typo. I meant to say, yes, Brice is a great asset to the forum.  [unsure]

Sadly Brice is correct but on the upside it looks like the new drills are backward compatible with the old batteries.  [wink]

the problem with that is that the drills are so well made that you will wear out the bateries before the drill gives up.
