Best Screws

Ron, I do a lot of Azek repair. Most of the McMansions in my area were built with trim that lasted less then 10 years. When I saw it at HD i got scared. They also have a sign above the display that says "Azek - starting at $3.77" Man, am I getting ripped off? Eric

In general I like GRK screws but they do have one major drawback, they don't draw material together all that well. You'll need to clamp stubborn pieces tight before screwing.

Rocky...as a cabinet installer I carry grk #8 1", 1 1/4", 1 1/2", 1 3/4", 2" & 2 1/2. I use 2 1/2" truss head/cabinet screw for hanging my cabinets. I've never had a cabinet fall due to my screws...I've seen people overload a cabinet & the backer is still on the wall!
For box assembly when the sides are not visible or if they're getting covered I use dominos and 1 1/2" screws...screwing from the outside of the box!

Brice is correct about drawing plywoods together...I have coarse threaded black square drive screws that I purchase at woodcraft that I use when necessary. It's definitely a predrill situation though!

Brice, unfortunately Im in one of the most expensive areas in the country. Im sure my lumberyard is giving me the best deal they can. They have been slow since 2008, actually so have I???Eric

By the electric code wires have to be at least 1 1/4" below the surface of the studs or covered with a metal plate. If you use screws that go deeper then this and hit a wire you are at fault. Also if you hit metal and keep screwing or drilling to get through you would be at fault. Even worse if you hit a wire and don't blow a circuit the potential short could cause a fire in the future. this happened to a friends business. It took 7 years after it was built for the fire to start. You also have to worry a bought hitting plumbing. I repaired a house where a drywall screw went into a copper heating pipe which did not leak until several years later when the end of the screw rusted off causing extensive damage.
