I believe I just completed a gloat-worthy purchase...even long distance from Nigeria.

I got an email from a colleague in Florida that one of his coworker's Brother-in-Law was killed in a motorcycle wreck a couple of months age.  The brother was a luthier and had a collection of exotic and figured woods and veneers that he had collected over 20 years.  The family wanted to sell the wood, and after seeing just a limited selection of the wood, I just scored the whole lot for $1500 working the phone and email as best I could while here in Nigeria.

The veneer stack (not pictured) is 3 ft high.  The wood below is a sample of the lot, and all told, a TON of highly figured and valuable wood for both worktable and lathe.  Sorry for their family's loss, but happy for a rare opportunity!

Sample shots:

Lots of deco boxes, humidors, platters, bowls, pens, picture frames, and more in this bunch... PLUS the superb figured veneers!

Cheers,

Frank

I'm really happy to see the true Black Ebony in the lot. He probably used it for fingerboards, but I make jewelry box drawer pulls and other inlay with it. Haven't been able to find any at a reasonable price in a long time, and have been dying darker wood to "look" like ebony, but unhappy that it's not real. Now they can be!

Haven't even been able to find any here in Nigeria which is next to Cameroon where most of the remaining ebony comes from.

Congrats on the score!

As far as Ebony, you shoulda called, Frank? I've got a few hundred board feet of old Macassar Ebony that came from the Philippines...

Yes the black ebony looks good

I bought an ebony carving in Kenya on holiday because I really wanted a piece .but I don't think it really is .I've not wanted to find out ....

Have been trying to think of a funny link to you needing another festool

"Because of the new timber stock ..I really need this (insert) "

But it escapes me at the moment ....

Hah!  Easy...  KAPEX!! [eek]

Might have to put that on hold until the end of August now, because in addition to this wood score,  I also just purchased a DJI Phantom 2 Vision+ Drone, thanks to someone on FOG who had the audacity to post a video of his first flight with one! Don't people know that it is terribly rude to post a product review that will cause OCD'ers like me to absolutely HAVE to have one?? [mad]

Must keep up with the Jones' don't you know!! [crying]

Cheers,

Frank

Just thought that was too obvious

I Reckon you could need an of2200 and accesory SYS  to use with a Leigh dovetail jig for all the boxs you will be making    [big grin]

I DO want an OF2200, but no interest in the Leigh because I have a router table extension on my SawStop with Incra's TS-LS fence system. I can make dovetails all day long on it...and perfectly. Unfortunately, the 2200 won't fit in my lift system, but the PC does the job in the table.  I want the 2200 for other purposes.

I plan to upgrade my SawStop to the 5HP Industrial mode with an Incra TS-LS fence,  and will also add a dedicated Incra router table, Jessum lift, and Incra Wonder Fence. I don't think there is a better, more accurate system made by anybody.

Also, if you haven't discovered Incra's iBox wood hinge system, you're missing out. Awesome!

Cheers,

Frank

Frank,

Nice score!  A drone, big haul of wood, a plane full of Festool and family (not in any particular order), I bet leaving Nigeria was never more anticipated.  I have heard mixed reviews of the iBox wood hinge system.  What do you like best about it?  One thing I read said for making small hinges for boxes isn't effective or efficient, maybe people just don't grasp the set up?  I have held off, but would appreciate your input or experience.
