Hi all , just been on vantainer.  com website and they have the new empty swivel type attic lid insert in stock. Just ordered 3 for my new pdc attic lid .
Dave

For anyone not familiar with the Vantainers site, they also have already-SYS-shaped Kaizen foam in several thicknesses at not-outrageous prices (as we'll as various other SYS-related inserts and accessories).

Sorry to hijack the thread but does anyone use their van racking? I'm interested in it but wanted some users views before I buy, given the price.

Thanks.

Richy, I don't have the van system but I had a good look over the VanTainer system at the W14 Exhibition.

It is impressive, and does give good access to the various Systainers. I did feel however, that there were a few shortcomings with the system.

The van they had the system fitted to at W14 was a VW Transporter LWB van. There was a fair bit of wasted storage space behind the racking and also, as the racking is designed to be easily and quickly removed when all the storage space is required, its rigidity was questionable over a long period of time.
I'm sure it could be made more rigid for long term fitting and use, but obviously it would then take longer to remove which partly negates the idea of the system.

The quality of the fittings and the design was good, but it was quite a lot of money. They were doing a promotion at the time( not sure if the offer is still available....???) of free additional Tanos Systainers.

Hope this helps,

Regards, Tim.

Hi Tim.
Thanks so much for the comments. They have really helped. It was for a VW Transporter LWB. I really liked the idea of being able to remove it if required but the price has always been a stumbling block. It is a really expensive solution and if longevity could be an issue then I'd rather not purchase. The Systainer offer appears to be a permanent offer. Wonder if it is a sweetener due to the price?

Thanks again.

Richard

Don't get me wrong Richy, it is a clever system, but I just felt it was trying to be everything to everybody.

If you were to fit the system in a van PERMANENTLY, then certain parts of what make it easy to remove could have been better and made the whole thing more rigid.

All the Tanos Systainers that were loaded on the racking at W14 were empty, perhaps had they been full, the additional weight may have helped to make the shelving a bit more solid.

My personal opinion is, a more suitable system for storing Systainers can be self- built to suit ones own personal requirements, especially when you factor in the cost of buying the Vantainer system.

Tim.

For us unfortunate folks here in NA who don't get Festool Lid-Sort (attic) lids, here's a picture of what they are referring to:

Also, it's worth noting that you can remove some of the tilting bit-holders to make room for longer bits. For instance, you can remove the top and third-row holders to make room for two rows (10 pcs) of 2" drivers, or remove all but the bottom row to make room for one row (5 pcs) of 4" drivers or bits up to almost 6" long. The bases, of course, have to be hex or Centrotec to fit in the holders. (I don't believe a standard 6" hex driver bit will fit in the lid, but I will check if anyone wants me to.)

And remember that you CAN buy the SYS2 with an attic lid from LeeValley - I've done it!
