I didn't want to discard a bunch of black walnut end cuts and extra pieces from the credenza project that I completed a while back so, I  decided to do a bunch of patch work with a lot of epoxy to build this solid black walnut nightstand.  I used my Domino joiner to do all of the joinery and the # 4 dominos came in handy for the twin blade tenons.  Sorry that I didn't take progress pictures but, I just got too busy and my camera work kinda sucks.  I used # 8 tenons for the rails to post tenons and # 6 tenons for the side, back and door panels.  I used both my RO 90 and my 150/3 sanders with a great deal of pleasure on this project.  I finished the nightstand with 3 coats of amber shellac and 4 coats of Minwax Satin Wipe-On Poly.  I haven't applied a wax finish yet but,  I'll add pictures as soon as I complete the finish.

A great use of leftover material that might otherwise be discarded, especially given the cost of Am.Black Walnut at the moment, looks very nice.
Camera work improves as with woodwork skills, with practice and I doubt many here will complain about the quality of pics...we love to see them ;D

Thanks Rob,

I have been struggling with what to do with 35 years of shorts, edge cuts, etc.  I have Brazilian rosewood, Indonesian rosewood, American black walnut, Honduras mahogany, Quater Sawn red and White Oak, etc in boxes all over my shop.  This was my attempt to salvage some of it while I toss more of it into my green waste container.  I hate wasting wood but, I have run out of shop space to keep storing all of it and since our summers out here are so darn hot, I found a lot of end checks since I find it impossible to coat the ends of every piece of scrap that I have been generating.

I'd like to hear from other FOG'ers on what they do with the accumulation of pieces left over from projects.

Take up wood turning or offer them to wood turners in your area, hobby turners (some schools and clubs) are always looking for cheap supplies of wood and some are pretty clever at it too.
You never know when you might need some turning done.  [wink]  [smile]
