Blanket chest for my daughter finished just in time for Christmas.  The frame and top is Mesquite I cut from central Texas, the panels are Rosewood, interior tray and bottom is Aromatic Cedar, and some Turquoise inlay. Hand rubbed oil finish and wax.

Wow, that is beautiful. Love the contrast between the Mesquite and Rosewood. I like how you did the inside also. Awesome job

Terrific workmanship and design.  I assume that you used dominos to build the frame.  Any other places that you used them?

Also, was the rosewood bookmatched ply, or did you do the match yourself?

The design for the chest came from Fine Woodworking January 2009 issue (Hickory and Ash Blanket Chest) which uses floating tenons in the construction and the Domino was perfect for the assembly. The rosewood is book matched 1/4" plywood that I laminated with 1/4" MDF and 1/4" Cherry plywood to make the full 3/4" panels. I mesquite came from a tree I cut down off my grand fathers place in central Texas years ago.

Beautifully done [smile]

One little suggestion - in case there's ever any little fingers nearby .. a gas strut of some sort for the lid may be a good addition.

... I can still remember the pain of the piano lid on my little fingers! [scared] [eek]

what an inspiration your work is for all of us - not only for the beautifully executed craftsmanshi of this heirloom but alsobecause you provide an inspiration for the rest of to contribute pictures and examples of work we are doing. After all, that's what makes the FOG the interesting and valuable forum it is.
so THANK YOU [member=59343]reynolds[/member] on both counts !
