Bowl Gouge

I bought a ( what I call ) a bowl gouge over the weekend at a garage sale. It is stamped ( L@I  J. White  Buffalo N.Y.  1837 ).I don't think it's from 1837 but I don't know. Any suggestions on getting the small rust squiggles off? I got a piece of PVC about the same diameter and sanded it down on a lathe to what seems to be a exact fit with a sand paper wrap. Anyone know the CORRECT paper I should be using? MARK

Sounds painful...I prefer using a bowl gouge!

I would roughly shape a piece of wood to the concavity  of the gouge, stick some 100 grit paper to it, and rub it back and forth on the gouge. Then repeat with 150, 220 and so on.

I have a bunch of these with honing compound on them which I use for my hand gouges. The lathe tools I do on the grinder.

No it is a bowel gouge. The guy that sold it to me was sitting in a wheel chair on a inner tube. These next pictures show 100 grit for 1 1/2 hours. MARK

Nice gouge there. But be aware that is not a bowl gouge and should not be used to work bowls.  That is a spindle ruffing gouge to be used with wood between centers.  You can see that the gouge tapers to the handle which means that the tool has a tang.  A bowl gouge is a solid rod with the flute shaped into it resulting in a strong tool.  You may see people online using these on bowls but I would strongly suggest against, I would never.  I have seen broken spindle ruffing gouges from using them on bowls and I have seen the staggering amount damage that it can cause if it breaks .

As already mentioned, the gouge in your pictures is a "Roughing Gouge".  It is used to turn a square, long piece of wood between centers to a round piece of wood/spindle.

Given the use of "Bowel" in this thread, I doubt anyone gave much worry about the use of "ruffing" gouge.
