Morning fellow festool people, finally got the boxes installed for my bamboo front builtins this weekend. The wine rack isn't install yet until I get the top finished. Doors will be bamboo ply and the top will be dark brown coloured bamboo ply. The tall unit on the right is a built in I put together a few months back. Used prefinish maple ply for the boxes, baltic birch for the drawers and mdf for the front so my customers could paint the same as their walls. No handles all touch release 100lb slides and blum tipons for the cupboard.

thx

The bamboo has been pretty easy to work with, glues good, takes stain, no problems with router and sands nice. Cut the top yesterday but still need to complete its edges.

thx

This looks great!  Thanks for posting...I have been intrigued by using bamboo but never have before.

I cannot get over how clean and organized your shop looks like...what an awesome space to do work.  Do you have pics of your shop posted somewhere?  I remember the thread on your Kapex extensions and table, but I would love to see the rest of your space.

Nice and clean looking boxes you've got there.

How did you make the wine rack? What material is it?  I really like the black on maple, very sharp.

I used the LR32 system to make the rack just set my spacings then cut with a 1/2 upspiral bit. The spindles were 1/2 powdercoated with a texture finish, just regular indoor railing type, although I did get them from restore for $2 each.
Not sure how to finish the top yet with a hard durable surface, any help on ideas would be great. Once the top is finished and fitted then I will slide in the rack, although now my customers also want a free standing one to fit on top.

Yes My shop is clean, makes it so much easier to work and stops my wife complaining about the dust in the house. I do have pictures on photobucket just search for lambeater.

thx

Very nice, look forward to seeing this one complete.  Interested to hear how you get on with the Blum runners.

I used accuride 100lb side mount soft close drawer slides, this is the first time I have tried them. They seemed alittle jittery to start but now seem much smoother. Not sure if I will use again or just use blumotions.

thx

Well I'm finall getting to the finishing stages of my bamboo builtins and thought I would post the doors, drawer fronts and how clean the LR32 cuts the hinge cup holes, very impressed. Still need to do final sanding, some filling and then I will again spray with General waterbourne enduro var which really has been great to work with. Have a question on filling. I do have the odd small gap on a couple of pieces and edge that I need to fill to hide. Has anyone got any good suggestions to keep it clean, a good wood filler or should I just mix some bamboo dust with glue to fill.

Thx

Several times I have sanded wood with 240 grit on a sheet of white paper and mixed it with laquer and used that as filler. When it dries give it a good sanding and once it sprayed with laquer it matches in perfectly. I don't no how well that it will work with water based varnish. It should work just that the drying time would be a lot longer than laquer

Depends on the size of the gaps you need to fill and how much the bamboo dust color changes when mixed with glue. The color you get when you mix glue with wood (grass) dust always seems to dry darker for me, so if the gaps are large enough I would definitely want to match the final color of the finished bamboo.  I would do some test pieces first as the filler will not absorb the finish the same way as surrounding bamboo will.

Tim the small gaps are very fine and the finish will just be clear. I think the varathane mixed with dust should be ok as a filler.

thx

Didn't work, tried the varathane dust mix, now off to the BORG to find some filler.
thx

Hi Lambeater,

Been following this post.  Did you end up filling it with something and if so what and how did it turn out?  I was going to suggest some clear epoxy.
