Bumping of Threads

If your item is priced correctly it will sell in a relatively short time and not need bumping.

A $650 domino is gone in minutes while one priced at $950 is going to take some time.

Ditto with large items like a vacuum that's only $75 less than new. They are hard to ship and buyers will be nervous.

Just be patient.  While they are festools and desirable, not everyone will beat a path to your door today.

Considering that shortly before Peter posted this I bumped a classified topic  [embarassed]  It was five years old though, and I did update it a bit.  I will note that the forum rule is for excessive thread bumping. There are certainly reasons to bump a thread on occasion. But sometimes it can get out of hand and become an annoyance.

What's a bump once in a while? Bothers nobody. I get that you want to prevent people bumping every day, turning it into spam. But I've never seen that happen here.

Having been on forums for years and selling odd stuff occasionally where finding the right buyer may take time, there is another side to it. Other forums insist on only one thread for the item being sold. Not allowing bumps would force folks to create multiple threads for the same item. Talk about confusing...

"Price Drop"

"To the moon Alice"

Seth is correct, excessive bumping is what I was getting at and that is why I included the link so that Members would go and read the exact phrasing.  There is nothing wrong with those trying to sell to add a post to their thread such as "Please note the new lower price", "Now offering free shipping", or something creative at least.  But "bump" or "my weekly bump" is really against the intent of the rules I believe.

Reasonability will always come into play.

Peter

PS. [member=1619]SRSemenza[/member], my post was not directed at you. [big grin]

A related issue: is it possible to delete an old Classified message/thread? If not, could this feature be added?

If you send either [member=1619]SRSemenza[/member] or me a message with a link to that thread we can delete it.

Yes, but could I get that demerit expunged ?  [big grin]

The bumping in the classifieds HAS gotten out of hand, and seems to be mostly by just a few people. Perhaps a moderator can quietly PM the worst offenders.

In all fairness, the generality of the statement only leaves us to use the standards employed and enforced on other forums as a guideline.  In that sense, I had assumed more often than once every 24-48 hours is not permissible.  This thread clearly indicates that's NOT what you had in mind, however there is a clear disparity between what was stated and what was understood (at least by me).  It would be helpful to define "excessive" more specifically or just forbid bumping unless it comes with a change in terms.

I never understood this.

Who cares about the bumps, who cares about people making tons of posts or even talking nonsense.

Just dont read it.

Bumping isn't talking smack, isn't modifying a tool, isn't political, which by the way if were allowed wouldn't bother me either, because I simply would not read the posts.

Why bumping gets on someones nerves is weird to me, who cares. Let them do as they like.

Personally I haven't been on top of bumping lately so it is partly my fault that more of it has been occurring.

Yes, it could be defined better. It is a little hard to define since the reason for a bump can be situational. I think we will look into that.

Mostly the guideline is as is to prevent a  lot  of  frequent  bumping that fills the top of the unread posts page with uselessness. True spamming  is obvious, other bumps less so. Yes, I know, "a lot" and "frequent" are  undefined for the moment.

I was truly unaware that bumping was frowned upon. I only joined the forum last month and thought bumping was a standard practice. After seeing many others bump their classifieds posts I assumed that it was acceptable. I apologize to all who are angry with me bumping my posts. Im definitely not bumping my posts everyday or two, but could understand that every few days could get annoying. I'm 15 and am still new to the group. Please accept my sincerest apologies.

Thanks very much. And it's not the end of the world.

Enjoy the forum  [thumbs up]
