Wrapped this up about a month ago, but was there again earlier today to put shelves in the cubby underneath, so I got to take some pictures. I did make a door for the cubby as well, but we're still deciding on hardware, so it hasn't yet been installed.
Client really wanted to use AC ply as the material and have exposed studs, so I was not going to stand in the way -- it definitely gives it more of a slapdash look. The target audience is 4 yr. old, though, so I think the look is fine with her. I did add some hardwood elements made from ash, however, to make it a bit cleaner.
Most of the plywood panels are doubled up 5/8, set over a 2x frames. The bottom bed is just a large mitred box, inside of which I ran some joists on which to lay boards to support the mattress.
The top bed that juts out rests on top of a 2x6 frame that spans the entire structure back to the wall, so it's plenty secure (just in case you were wondering)
