Buyer Beware - Classifieds

Well …..for example …my favorite router (so Im always watching)…2200 in the classifieds now…no price no pictures ( for security reasons ??) and …
TWO posts…you in ?
And he has visited the forum via ip addresses linked to Miami, Nevada, and Nigeria. I am not saying that amounts to anything, just what the software shows me.

I sold a TSO 32” T-Square to a member I felt I knew from his posts. I don’t recall if I shipped first and then received the check, or if I got the check first and then shipped. I think I quoted a delivered price, but I’m not sure of that either.

The one thing I am certain of is I would deal with him again with no worries.

CORRECTION: It was a Woodpeckers’ T-square, not a TSO product. It does not change the intent of the post, but a factual error that needed correction.

Perhaps, a “good experience, approved seller” and a “good experience approved buyer” list. Maybe the “negative” list is what is making the moderators nervous. This list would only show the positives.

That would work for the bulk, but I think it sets up to throwing caution out the window, in the case of a hacked account you could blindly trust the seller in an "approved list" scenario.

I think you have to go with your gut, and evaluate the details, syntax, etc to help determine if it is someone you've been dealing with prior, or possibly it's been hacked, or is a scam.

I will make a correction above, but the T-Square was red anodized, and that would a Woodpecker’s product, not a TSO product. Doesn’t change the gist of the post, but was a factual error anyway.

The “approved” list would include the “approved” contact information. Or better, “Contact me with a PM with your seller’s contact information and I will confirm that it matches the information I have from my transaction.”

None of these suggestions sound exactly right. But the discussion is useful in my opinion.

While I haven't bought from the classifieds here, I had bought quite a bit on Marketplace. I really only buy from sellers I can pickup directly and give them cash. Or the dropoff/pickup thing.

On here, I would probably buy and have shipped an item from the regular suspects!

A caveat on cash sales.

In my opinion, the best location to finalize a cash sales is in your local bank. My bank will lend me desk space for that purpose (I asked in advance).

There was an article in a local newspaper when I lived on Long Island, about a guy who sold his car for cash on a Saturday (back then banks were closed on Saturdays). So the seller had several thousand dollars in cash in his home, and a total stranger knew it and knew the address. The seller was burglarized and the cash was stolen.

The obvious thief was the buyer, but he had an alibi (but could have had an accomplice).

In any case, finishing the cash transaction in the bank means that the deposit could be made before leaving the bank. A safer option.

An adjacent story:

A guy was selling a $300 Woodcraft gift certificate he got from family and had no use for (the story I forget but it was credible). He suggested meeting at the Woodcraft to buy it so they could prove it had the $300 on it. Perfecto, I got it for something like $250. When he walked out, I told the Woodcraft owner that I wanted to buy a new $300 gift certificate with the one I just bought. He was confused because that one has $300. "Well, he could have taken a photo of it and the codes and spend it as soon as he leaves so I want to 'launder' it into a new card he doesn't have access to" A light went off and the guy rang up that new card so fast haha!
