I have a hobby shop. I am going to buy the Domino but wonder if it is prudent to buy the $285 package with all the various tenons. I know it is dependent on how much work I do. Just wondering the experiences of other hobby shops and their purchases on this item.

The assortment also comes with the 5 cutters.  If you see yourself working primarily in 3/4" thick material only, then you might need the assortment.  I prefer to have everything at hand to allow the most flexibility.

i have the assortment and thimk you definetly need it. it saves a lot of money (In the long run) as you get all the cutters.
i believe that a hobiest is in more of a need for this assortment that the pros. the pros will need a lot more of one or two domino sizes(maybe more ). a hobbiest will do a wide variety of projects and need all the different sizes.
i think you should get it if you do more than one size domino.
i know i use them all regularly exept the 6mm as thats used on 3/4 "material so alot more used

Thats hard to answer.  I'm a hobbyist, bought the Domino and the cutter/tenon kit when it first came to the US (3 years ago??).  The assortment is a very good deal financially, even if there's a size you might not use.  I work mostly with hardwood in various thicknesses, wound up buying additional 8x40, 8x50, and 10x50.  I've used relatively few of the 5mm tenons.  I agree with the others above that having them around just in case is a great idea.  Once you start using the domino you find lots of unexpected uses for it!

The cutters last a long time, so unless you develop a habit of dominoing thru nails or screws [embarassed], you may never have to buy another one...

... I have to say that of all my more expensive Festool purchases that sticker pain went away the fastest with the Domino.

I agree with this statement.

To the OPs question:
I am a hobbyist.  I did NOT buy the assortment.  Since having the Domino now for a while, I have acquired the 4mm, 6mm, 8mm cutter and loads of tenons.  I have not yet had a need for the 10mm.  I also got the Domino tenon Systainer.  With money spent, the assortment would have been a savings and it includes the 10mm.

The fact that the assortment now includes the 4mm cutter, it really is a good deal.  The 4mm didn't exist when I got the Domino.  It's great for 1/2" ply and I've used quite a few of them.

Hobby shops here. I bough the whole shebang. The thought process was, I did not want to start working on something and  then not have what i needed. When you purchase the Domino and the Tenon systainer,  you got every thing you need. Period.  Last thing I want is to wait another week because I did not by a 4mm cutter and tenons.

Yes, get the set. I like being able to use exactly the right tenon for the application, whether it be 4mm tenons for drawer sides, 5mm and 6mm for carcasses, or 8mm and 10mm tenons for tables, my workbench etc.

I haven't regretted buying the set for a single moment.

Hobbyest here.  Got the Dom Sys Assortment when I bought mine.  All previous posts are bang on.  You won't regret.

+1 on the assortment.  I bought that and have used all the sizes on different projects ans have had to refill several bins of dominos.  The cutters are about $30 each, so more than half the price is cutters, then $65 for the systainer, the dominos are almost free.

I wish they had more deals like this!  [big grin]

Is it time to buy now or is a new one pending?

I am also considering buying the complete Set and the extra Systainer.

a new version, the domino XL is coming out in fall, but it doesn't replace the current domino, as it is for bigger work and will probably cost alot more.
so depending on what you intend to use it for you could wait for the XL, but it won't be able to handle smaller work.
and get the extra systainer with it! it is alot cheaper than buying the dominos and the cutters separately. wich in the end you will need to do anyway.

I just received the Domino tenon & cutters bargain set I ordered, fast service -- I was expecting that it would be the old style Systainer at that reduced price but it is the new T-Loc style -- Very nice indeed.
