I'm fairly new to the forum, but i've been a Festoligan for a while.  I got a c12 drill for Christmas and was wondering if it is normal that the clutch only works in high speed?

Thanks
Drew

Nope, mine works at both low and high speeds. The speed gearing appears to happen after the clutch, however, so the amount of torque for a given clutch setting is different depending on which speed you're in.

THE CLUTCH IS MORE SENSITIVE IN HIGHT SPEED THAN LOWER SPEED.
Meaning that if you have it set at mid range, it will slip at a lower torque when in high range than in low range.

I don't have a C12 but that's the way the clutch on my TDK's works.

Thanks again for as always for your informative posts. Hope you have had a good Christmas.  You have added to my knowledge about things Festool many times and just a note of Thanks. I always look foreward to your posts.

Rick,

Thanks for your explanation and excellent diagram.  But I still don't fully understand how the Festool C12 clutch system works.  At page 13 of the 2007 Festool USA catalogue, near the upper right corner, it states that "Torque shut-off is activated electronically--with virtually no mechanical wear.  So is the Festool C12 torque control mechanical, electronic, or more accurately described as a combination of both?

Seems like the torque control and the clutch are related but different, the torque shut-off being electronic, the clutch mechanism itself mechanical.

Thanks for the valueble info guys.  I was I didn't realize the clutch worked like that, but I still can't get it to work in low speed.  I really like the drill though.

Take it back and get a new one.

Thanks, Rick, for your detailed explanation, and the very neat full color solid model.  Everything now makes sense.
