C18 Magnet Problem

I have a strange question for you, which I'm hoping someone may have a solution.

I have a C18 & T18+3 and use them both on drilling metal occasionally and I constantly get swarf stuck to the
magnets at the front for storing hex bits.

I keep thinking about taking the drill apart to see if I can remove or replace them with something else, has anyone already done this or have any other suggestions?

I have tried de-magnetising them but can't really get on them properly.

Any thoughts would be appreciated as metal splinters are driving me crazy!  [smile]

When you drill metal you can cover the magnets with some (easy to remove) tape, like thin width painters tape. Then you can just pull the tape and the swarfs off in one go. It is not as awkward as it sounds.  You can still use it to fit bits.

If you are drilling a lot in metal you could always fit a wider tape and leave it on for the session and then just pull it off. The bit garage on the front is something I really like so I wouldn't remove any magnets myself.

The wider yellow builders tape is easily removable and would serve as a swarf shroud. Fold the end over in the bottom or top and it should peel right off leaving no marks. Don't use Gaffa/Duct tape though, it would be messy.

I've refurbished an old TDK 12 by installing a new switch, putting in new grease and replacing the entire shell. I forgot to add the magnets again, so I opened it again to add them.

The TDK had a sticker on top that had to be cut in order to take it fully apart, seems the T18 has that too.

You could always take a look at ekat.festool.de for the exploded view. But pieces like at post '28' (spring) are usually not very cooperative when reassembling.
