Can a CT-22 Vac handle DC on 8" grizzly jointer and a 10" Delta lunchbox planer?

I plan to get a CT-22 vac soon.  Will the CT-22 be enough to handle my dust collection for a Grizzly 8" jointer and a lunchbox planer?  Oh, I also have a band saw too.  All those stationary tools have 4" dust ports, so I'd have to get some reducers.  I know I will be using bags more if I try to use the CT-22, but my only other option is to by a rather large 4" traditional DC.  The downside to that is more space, more tools and the bags really don't filter well (at least not down to HEPA standards).

Maybe an easier way to ask the question is: Can a CT-22 handle all dust collection needs for nearly every tool (esp. big stationary tools w/ 4" dust ports)?  I'd love to just have one tool for dust collection because space is an issue in my shop.

THanks,
Greg

I seriously doubt it. The CT is designed for hand tools, not stationary.

Greg,

The short answer is no; shop vacs are high flow/low volume machines, larger dust collectors are low flow/high volume machines and with the tremendous amount of chips emitted from the jointer and planer you'd fill the bags way too quickly and won't get all the material up. They have 4" dust ports for a reason. Years ago, I owned a  large Dewalt hybrid ts and for a while used the CT 22 (actually CT 11) and the dc was no where as effective as when I hooked it up to a proper dust collector.
There are small portable units available now for a reasonable amount of $$ - worth a look.

Yeah, that makes sense.  Come to think of it, the little I've jointed and planed I've generated decent-sized saw-dust piles on the floor.  Thanks for the advice.

As other said.  The short answer is no.  I have a CT22 with a dusty deputy.  I have a dewalt 735 planer (it has an integrated blower) and a 6" jointer.  I connect the DD to the planer with a 4"hose.  The discharge of the DD is vented to the outside (not connected to the CT). Dust collection is amazing, but I have to make sure tha the DD is not full or chips will fly.  The limitation is that the dust deputy's 5 gallon buckets fills after only planing a few boards.  I have already emptied the bucket more than 15 times in the last 6 months.  Thus, the DD is almost paid for and i haven't changed the bag in the CT.  Bags are around 5-7 dollars each.

I have also connected the CT and DD to the jointer.   Dust collection is non existent if I connect a 1 1/2" hose from the port on the planer (4") with a reducer to the DD.  I get get better results if I locate the end of the hose as close to the cutter head as I can.  This doesn't prevent chips from shooting onto the floor, but keeps the chute and cutter head from clogging, and thus it keeps me jointing continuously as opposed to having to stop every 10 minutes or so to unclog the chute.

I have limited space so I learned to live with this compromise.  All other power tools work great with the CT/DD combo.  I try to do all my jointing in one session so that I have to clean shavings/dust only once.  Otherwise, I generate very little sawdust that is not collected.

I hate to be the lone dissenter but I use a CT 22 hooked up to a DW735, 13" planer, with a 50mm antistatic hose. There is almost no dust or debris anywhere but in the CT - I'd call the collection 99%. This planer has a pretty good blower so even if you don't have any suction it will blow most of the stuff in a bag so that may be part of the success. I was very pleasantly surprised at how well it works. I just had to try it...

I use the long-life bag and it fills up but I just empty it out. It can remove a lot of material with what it can pack in that bag.

BTW: I know somebody's going to tell me to "get a real planer" but for what I do, it works well and I got it brand new for $131.53.

EDIT: Jesus: You must have pulled the trigger at about the same time I did.

EDIT AGAIN: Perhaps I should state that I don't use a jointer, I use a TS 55 or TS 75.

Tom,  please tell us that [quote I got it brand new for $131.53.[/quote]  is a miss-print.  I know I just spent 4X that on mine.  At $131.53, I'll take a few to go ;D

Tom, I have the same planer - the best of the lunchbox planers on the market. But the blower on that planer is doing all the work and almost anything would work with that planer. It is my understanding that most if not all lunch box planers do not have such a blower.
BTW, that is the best price I  ever heard on the Dewalt; they sell used for more than what you paid. Good deal!

It was not a misprint. Several of the HD regions across the country decided not to sell them anymore. When that happens, they start discounting them and continue until they all sell. I had to drive to Killeen to get one but I scored when they were as low as they would go before they were going to literally trash them. I would have liked to get a truckload at that price but it wasn't in the cards.

I tried running my Hammer A3 31 which is a 12" Planer/ Jointer off my CT 22 and I  went through about 4 bags milling one simple board and it could not keep up with the machine either.

I don't know if I would even recommend a Dust Deputy. You are probably better off getting a seperate Dust Collector for the big machines.

Wouldn't do it... Hooked up my Dewalt # ..... to my shop vac and because that planer has a build in blower, it threw off the lid right away and created a huge mess!

I hate to tell you this Dan, but I picked up the same planer from the Borg for 116.xx.   [big grin] It was a couple of months ago when the Borg was getting rid of the 735 to make room for the 734.

Damn! And that's right here in NJ! Wish I would have known!

When I heard The Borg was dumping them, I began looking around and when Joe, one of my Sherpa's, happened to visit the Borg in Barrington, NJ one night where he saw it on sale for about 250.  As I was getting into the shower, he called me to confirm I wanted it.  Sure, I said, just confirm nothing was missing.  The Borg was having one of those instant rebates going on and the tool section manager convinced Joe to spend about another 30.00 bucks and he would qualify for 50.00 off. Duh!...  Joe selected some blades we needed to push the price up to the next level.  The manager walked him to the checkout where it was rung up.  I'm not certain how it happened, but I think the computer calculated the instant discount off the original price of the planner  [huh] and it rung up for a few pennies over 116.  If they had had any more in the store, Joe would have bought every last one.

It was real spotty. The plot thickens... Guess how I learned about this.

In the Austin "metropolitan area", they were $131.53. So I went looking for stock.

I went to the place that gets most of my business and they were out but checked out the area. The place down the Interstate about 15 miles supposedly had one. I went there and they "couldn't find it". They were apologetic and called around... They finally found 13 of them in Killeen, which is about an hour and a half on a real good day. It was a weirdly active day and it took me about 2 hours to get there. I was planning to buy 4 because of the vehicle I had.

I got them to bring out 4 on a dolley and when ringing them up, they wanted, (as memory serves me), $499.99 each, on Sale! I told them of my journey from Austin to Kyle to Killeen and that I had been assured twice that I could buy them for $131.53. Half of my day is over and I have nothing to show for it. I thought I was spending it getting something for nothing. That'll teach me...

I then sat down with the manager of the moment at that store and he called the manager of the store that sent me. They agreed that I was getting a raw deal all around the central part of the state.

Anyway, 'long story short, the corporate division that the Killeen store belonged to wasn't part of the shedding of these planers so they didn't have the fire sale and that's why they still had a lot of the planers. They sold me the unit at the Killeen price and told me how to get it at the Austin price, which I did. It's a trick and I agreed to do it only once - only as payback for my inconvenience.

That's why I didn't take all 13 and rent their truck to get them back to Austin.

This is my story of persistence, repeated disappointment, and eventual, realistic acceptance.

This is also my Thanksgiving story. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one out there that will make good on missteps or misconceptions.

I give thanks to all those that are trying to do Good Things. I especially give thanks to those that are challenged and keep on trying anyway.

Happy Holidays,

Tom

Well, Greg already decided on the 1 HP DC from Grizzly, so this is late, but for any other readers, when I had a Ridgid lunchbox, I bought a Steel City "Mini-DC"; street price is $50 and if you have that $10-off coupon from Woodcraft, well, do the math.  It is maybe 12" long with a bag off one side.  It has a rubber connection to the tool.  I could run a lot of boards through the planer before dumping the bag, which was easy since it had a fully zippered side.  That was before I bought a larger DC so it was fantastic.  At $40ish with the sales/rebates lately, you can't complain.  I still have it since it seems too useful to sell off or give away (as an aside, I once found my kitchen garbage can loaded with flying gnats... yes, you can see where this is going, i used that mini-DC to suck them into the bag since nothing else got rid of them... not sure the CFM, they can't out-fly it)
