Carvex 420 first impressions

@Jaybolishes : That's the whole point! IT IS NOT SUPPOSED TO!! The guide was set up correctly, just as Festool demonstrated Remco..
@Nigel : Have you even looked at the first 33 seconds?? Just as was demonstrated by Festool NL.
@Laminator : No, this was not the (whole) test you have been waiting for. It will be online soon
@Shane : Nice to see I finally have some Facebook followers ;-).
To give you a more accurate translation (yes, Dutch isn't Bings native-language ;-) )
---
"Could it be, that it (bending blades) might not be the test that is at fault? Maybe it (bending blades) could actually be the PS420's fault? Have you guys tried it with both of the machines?"
---
I was not present at the second day's test, I had my nephews over (1,5 years and the other 3 months).. That's why I asked if they tried it with BOTH PS420's. I had only witnessed it with the first one (on the first day of testing).
Nice to see that the Orange (yes, I know, the Dutch national-soccer-color ;-) ) Shirts have made an impression!
I don't think it is strange that Sander wanted us to wear them, seeing that he (and his Gereedschappro) made it all possible, and publicity is always welcome for every kind of business... In my opinion, it would actually be rude not to wear the shirt.. Seeing that it was made possible that I could test out several machines without having to have to pay for anything...

The test Remco did at Festool was with a piece of wood that was only 95mm x 95mm. If you look at the temperatures, you can see that it gets really hot really soon. Halfway through the 102mm x 200mm you see temperatures between 100 and 170 Celsius. I can only imagine  the temperatures at festool were probably the same (at approximately 150 Celsius)... My bet would be, that if they would cut two of those pieces directly after each other (maybe even bonding them) you would have the same results (temperatures that shoot up to +/- 300 Celsius).

I would love to see you all re-do this test (a 102mm x 200mm piece of wood), because if it happened to us it probably would happen to you to.
Please do the test safely though. If you watch the footage, you see a lot of sparks being sucked into the shopvac. That's an accident waiting to happen... (sawdust, lots of air, burning sparks... I can only imagine..)

To set the record straight, is there anyone with a Carvex 420 who can replicate the test on their own and post their results here, please? Someone not associated with a Mafell dealer or Festool.

Hi Shane

I have been logging all of the areas where people say that the PS420 fails. Because of my connection with 'The Woodworker' magazine I expect to have a machine to test very soon. I will start a new 'Review' thread once I have tested it completely. I find it difficult to believe that blades can get that hot when installed correctly. One thing that I have discovered is that you have to have the correct, parallel sided, blades. The old slightly tapered blades are no good.

Peter

This is just silly. As Shane points out, there has already been a posted video of the 420 and mafell both making a straight cut through a thick piece of wood (even though that is seldom what a jigsaw is used for) with no problem. Franky while this was originally interesting, given this last video, it is painfully obvious that this was posted primarily to discredit Festool, not to do a valid comparison of tools used in an appropriate manner. If I were Shane, I'd seriously think about stopping this thread.

Shane!  I will be more than happy to do a JMB video test!

I spoke to my dealer 2 day saying how I am not very happy and he said he will see what he can do!  sooo  I might be getting a 420 now soon as I have one ill do some test of different  types of cuts  including the large stock shown in the video!

Mine is cordless though so even if  I did get hold of the Mafell one I wouldnt be able to compare the difference!

My test will always be fair like always! I say it how it is  [big grin]  CRAP OR GOOD lol

They are using the wrong blade - it should be the 499478

Peter

Another point, it would be very simple to create severe problems just by applying a lot of forward force while cutting. This would be completely undetectable in the video

Oh, yes. Sander. I recall that name.

A little over a year ago, Peter Halle banned a forum member who was being very antagonistic toward forum members and having an obvious agenda, after collaborating with Seth and I. This member was very critical of Festool and directed people to Gereedschappro's website while promoting other brands. Gereedschappro used to be a Festool dealer and for various reasons, Festool chose to no longer do business with them about this same time. I private messaged the member to ask his affiliation with Gereedschappro. He said that he "knew the owner" but was not affiliated with them. Meanwhile, I got an unsolicited message from a another forum member in the Netherlands telling me about Sander and his association with Gereedschappro. I was later able to positively identify the member, All About Tools, as Sander Schuiten based on his email address. By the way, his posts were removed in large part from the forum when he was banned, but a couple of his posts remain.

So I guess this confirms that he is the owner and was not truthful about his affiliation with Gereedschappro.

Also interestingly, this forum member tried logging onto the forum, after a year of being away, numerous times right (minutes) before and right after this thread was started. He was not allowed to log on because of the ban on his account.

Peter and Seth can corroborate this information.

Some one on the forums must have a 420 to to the same test.. it would only take 5 minutes....

john...

Well the cat's out of the bag . Pathetic. If you want do hatchet job try to be a bit more subtle guys. I mean I'd be the first to knock a crap tool but this is ridiculous. Maybe the Carvex 420 is rubbish but your history as posted above makes your 'test' a joke.

I just want to see a review of the 420 doing tasks that I use a jigsaw for.  Like cutting a hole in a door for a doorknob in the  rare occasion when I don't have my hole saws.  Or cutting out letters for a sign. Maybe cutting out a hole for a sink, you know, the stuff I use a jigsaw for.  Good grief.

Could some merchant in the UK just get JMB a 420, a P1cc and maybe even a Bosch and a Makita for completeness and we could put this debate to rest in a week ;-)

Give me a list and I will try and cover it in my review. When you say a hole for a doorknob do you mean something about 50mm across? I cannot promise to do lettering - lets leave that for JMB and his spell checker.

Peter

You can see clearly in the video that pendulum is off too which really wont help things in wood that thick

What worries me is all this "oh you have not set up the blade properly etc"  you should not need to..... its a jigsaw. put a blade in and off you go..

The door knob hole was a bad example, I would always use a hole saw. But yeah a 50mm hole in a door would be good squareness test.  Seeing it cut a round corner on a hardwood counter top maybe, seeing if it stays square.   Id love to see it cut a maple butcher block countertop, man is that abusing.  Backing it out of a cut.  Really the main thing I want is a square cut in material 2" or less.  Are the light issues true? Do the blades overheat with correct setup, are the blades not lasting long with the new guide system as I have heard.  How does it do cutting at angles and how accurate and easy is angle setup, my dewalt is dissapointing.  What's the dust collection seem like? Maybe show it working with a rail.   I hope these ideas may help our reviewers. Basically lets hear if the old 400 problems are gone and is this the best jigsaw out there or not.  I think there's a lot of use needed by numerous owners to get a good consensus.  Wish I could get one to help.

Okay Jay.

That is really useful. Perhaps others might like to add their thoughts.

I agree with that totally. Never reset my ps300 guide ever.

That's fine if you leave them open...

If you set the carbide guides tight to the blade, you are going to overheat the blade - plain and simple. Any of these ridiculous, perfidious tests, that are designed from the outset to result in failure, are not only meaningless but these situations betray the ill intent of the perpetrators toward their potential customers.

Who uses a jigsaw to cut 100mm timber [huh].

I am no fan of the Carvex but lets have some real meanngful tests.

This is Bovine manure..................................

I can produce those results with any jigsaw , just push way to hard and you will either overheat the blade or blade guides (of any style) . You are supose to let any power tool cut, not push it so it bogs down and get that hot. So what if it takes 3 second more than another make.

This is just rubbish lock this thread but  leave it veiwable so all can see it for what it is. BS and game playing.

Sorry John, but I disagree about locking this thread. I think that would be viewed as Festool manipulating the entire question and test results because so far it's been unfavorable to their tool marketing. Instead I'd like to see this remain open and continue with MORE "tests" by other unrelated individuals and let the viewers/readers decide, not the moderators.
