Carvex. How tough is it?

Not sure what is up with this entitlement attitude lately that Brent, Peter or Seth "owe" anyone a "public" explanation about anything. Being a member of a forum doesn't come with all the rights that some here seem to want to think it does.

It is a tool forum. Get over it.

The threads regarding that video are here on the forum if you wish to search.  If you don't, then come to whatever conclusions you wish but your term "censorship" is without merit without you taking any time since my last post to research it.

If you wish to continue this conversation then I am available via PM (said for the second time).

I don't know what you think this forum is all about. But once you strip back all the niceties of sharing knowledge, member networking, review, etc, etc. The bottom line is, well - the bottom line. Festool's decision to run this forum is an economic equation where the costs involved are less than the revenue generated by gaining sales through forum activity.  As such the forum is part of Festool's business model and  it is perfectly reasonable for customers to challenge and seek clarification on issues cited on the forum.

Most of us got over the whole "question everything" thing in college.

Festool can operate this forum for any reason they want to. It appears that they offer it as a service to their users, not as an open invitation to a biotch fest. That is one of the reasons this forum is one of the few that many of us visit...it doesn't allow the drama and bickering that most turn into.

I think many of us here, in the USA, can say that we have met Peter, Seth and maybe even Brent in person. I can assure you that these guys have lives outside of the FOG that are much more important than petty challenges of Festool corporate policy.

I suggest that if you have a problem with Festool, call Festool and complain. It is a more direct route. No need for grand standing, we are all adults.

Scott B got it spot on. I remember the old thread that caused such problems at the time and Peter is absolutely right to head similar stuff off in case it gets out of hand.

He's been moderating this forum (superbly) a lot longer than most people have been members of it, so perhaps he deserves a little faith and respect when he makes a decision to edit something.

That is exactly it...it is just downright disrespectful and presumptuous for FOG members to log in here and act like they are freakin executive board members.

Entitlement gets especially tiresome on the internet. But it is so easy to sit anonymously at the keyboard and let her rip.

The censorship was deleting the video in the first place. Why do so if the information already exists on the forum?  That's a little contradictory, surely?

I'd rather keep this discussion public, where it originated (said for the second time).

It's public. Go search it. Read more. Write less.

It's public. Go search it. It's a simple matter of duplication and drama control.

Read more. Write less.

I had to do a couple of different searches to find the thread in question, and I'm still reading through it. I just think it would have been less grief to just link to it. Shrug.

For those in the same boat I was: http://festoolownersgroup.com/festool-tool-reviews/carvex-420-first-impressions/?all

Thanks. But I had already found it.

What I am more interested in, is the decision to delete the video and not publicly discuss it, than the actual video itself.

I for one believe it speaks far more loudly that a moderator would delete this video and stone wall any conversation around it, rather than allow or contribute to a discussion.

Just like in the thread a few days ago about the Carvex warranty, the input from the moderators/admin has only served to exacerbate the original matter.

As I type I notice three Auusies are following this thread.

Come on guys follow me down to my/your shop and have some fun using our tools, and leave this FOG politics to the 'Northern' members.  [smile]

Probably just a simple matter of it not need to appear in two threads?

orm,

Your join date is fairly recent so I can understand you may not have seen the extensive discussions surrounding this video, This site does have good search capability and barring that a simple request for a link to the past threads would have seen a flood of people posting one for you.

What I find offensive is your choice to not follow either of those paths or many other productive ones I didn't list but instead disparage individuals and insinuating some secret agenda for the deleting of the video and then of the suggestion that if you need to further discuss it to do it off line (i.e. PM) so your agenda doesn't disturb the rest of us.

Before you chock this post up as a koolaid drinking fanboy, a simple review of my posts will show I do a fair bit of questioning of Festool but at this point I have far more questions about your agenda in this matter than I do Peter's.

Right?!

This forum has never been about spoon feeding every odd (ultimately) corporate policy question about this manufacturer.

The personal jabs at forum leadership are disturbing. You won't meet three nicer guys in real life than Peter, Seth or Brent.

How dare you insinuate that we "Notherners" are political!  This from folks who have to deal with the water spinning down the drain backwards, along with their routers and orbital sanders going the wrong way... and cars that have the steering wheel on the WRONG side!!

Pfft! [big grin]

To get back on track with the original post topic...

I love you Carvex. It's the first Festool machine I purchased and has gone above and beyond in even my high performance expectations. I researched the Carvex for months before making the purchase and I compared it to the other top tier jigsaws available (minus the Mafell as its far too expensive).

Initially I bought the cordless barrell grip and wasted no time putting it through its paces. When I first bought the Carvex it was my only saw of any kind and therefore used it for everything. I've used it to cut everything from cabinet grade plywood, steel, aluminum, flooring, tile and all dimensions of lumber boards. The largest cut I have made with the Carvex is through a 4x6 and it didn't skip a beat.

As far as projects done with the Carvex, I've built multiple cabinets (yes, only using the Carvex for cutting), shelves, desks and even used it to build a simple deck with one flight of stairs. Like I said, initially I had the cordless but traded it for a corded version once I got a proper shop area to work out of. The cordless held awesome charges.

As far as durability, it actually really is stout and can take a beating. Idk how many times I dropped my cordless version but I dropped it a lot and plenty of times onto asphalt and concrete and all that showed was a minor scratch or two and ran perfectly afterwards. I'm usually pretty careful with my tools as I'm just a hobbyist and can't afford multiples of my Festool items. That being said, it took me a while to get used to having my cordless tool attached to a hose so that's where a lot of its falls came from. I haven't taken it to a true construction sight but in my experience, it's a pretty rugged piece of machinery.

There are plenty of youtube videos of the Carvex that should help you in making your choice on it. And btw, the Carvex vs Mafell video was made twice. The first one the Carvex was not used properly during the "cut race" and the makers of the video actually made a second video showing them using the saw correctly. The Mafell still beat it in speed but not by much and not by $400+ worth.

I can't offer much advise about the carvex, but I will say that my trion has become one of my favorite Festools and until I started using, hated jigsaws.  Remember you do have 30 days to put it through its paces in your particular environment.
