My friend was tired of her guest room becoming her cat room.  She needed a place to put the litter box where she didn't have to deal with smelling up a whole room.  The garage was the obvious choice but there's no direct access to the garage from the house proper.  So first I made this.  The door flap is a $3 floor may fr Home Depot cut in half and doubled up.

Then I made this on the other side of the wall in the garage.

The lid folds down into a table that you can leave the litter box on when changing the litter so you don't have to do it on the floor of the cluttered garage.

A couple days after I was done she called me back and said we had overlooked putting vents in it.  I mounted my guide rail, clamped on one end and holding the other for dear life. And made four double thick 12.5 degree angles up cuts in the side of the box.  It was frightening and wonderful.  Forgot to take another pic after.

We had a similar issue but no garage or other isolated area to use. The solution was to use the space under our stairs, which faces into a combination hall/utility area that is visible from our kitchen. Just meant it had to be prettied up and accessible from the living space but a very similar concept.

The little framed opening is a swinging cat door, which our cats just could not grasp in the beginning. To train the boys we shoved them in and let them figure out how to get out - no problem afterwards. There is an electrical outlet inside with a night light so they can read whilst doing their business...

Love it!  I was gonna do lighting in this one, but my friend's sister, who she lives with, drew the line at that.  I find that cats are usually pretty scared of construction, but hers were very curious while I was building.  They jumped through the hole I cut in the wall before I'd even added the flap and couldn't wait to check it out once I was done.

All the above is on my to-do-someday list. I think I even have a bathroom fan purchased for that purpose. Got neglected during construction.

For whatever weird reason no one has ever noticed an odor. I should probably check the insulation in the crawl space, probably means there is an unsealed penetration somewhere under the stairs.
