centrotec mod

Maybe this is an opportunity for someone like Seneca to make a 1/4" chuck for the festool drills

I thought I remembered a solution to this, as long you don't mind a bit of extension? In my Centrotec Installers kit that I got for Christmas there is a short ~ 3" long adaptor that snaps into the Centrotec chuck and adapts it to standard 1/4" hex holder that also has a locking mechanism,  not just a magnet.

The reason I had to check is because I don't yet own a Festool drill. Anyway, it is Part No. 492648 $25.00 and someone posted a picture above. Yes, it does have slop in it just like any other 1/4 extension guide that I've seen. It is not as steady as chucking a 6" driver bit in any of my Milwaukee Hex or Impact Drivers, that's for sure.

My solution right now is to chuck the Centrotec adaptor into my Milwaukee and then use my Centrotec bits like that. Works great until I can afford a green drill!!

Your Centrotec Installer Kit comes with an adapter, 496450, to make any drill capable of accepting a Centrotec chuck.

There is even an extra Centrotec chuck in the kit.

Yep, thanks! That's what I use with my M12 drill(s). I have been known to use the Centrotec bits in the standard M12 Hex driver when I am in a hurry and its the first thing I grab, but of course they don't lock in then. I never use it for drill bits or anything 'sharp' since there is always the chance that it could hit the floor...

The Festool Centrotec is a proprietary solution to all that ails the "standard" 1/4 drive system you want to adapt. There really is no good way to use those with the Centrotec system as Festool engineered their adapter to not accept them. You CAN put them in the 1/4 hex drive directly in the drill or use the adapter either of which as Johnny Round Boy pointed out, will wobble. Festool improved the basic concept to eliminate runout...

Does anybody else laugh at the irony of eliminating runout in a hand held tool?

James,

I got a chuckle ;-) I bought my first Festool drill several weeks ago T12+3 and am amazed at the comparative lack of run out. I have new (bought this year) Makita brushless impact and brushless hammer drills 18v and there is just no comparison. I have used square drive screws for years so all I really needed were square drive bits for the centrotec. Bought those at ToolNut. A little pricy compared to the standard 1/4 bits but as a hobbiest it will take me20 yrs to wear it out. Nice drill!

Did this mod today. Thought I'd give it a try with one of my kreg shelf pin drills.

Chucked it up in my pillar drill and set to it with a couple of different files and in no time it worked perfectly in a centrotec chuck.

With the kreg shelf pin bits the depth collar just fits snug up against the centrotec chuck.

I think my trend hinge drills will be getting this treatment next :)

Had to scroll back up to see what mod you were referring to and noticed Tom & Wow both contributing to this.

Yeah I saw that too.

I remember watching Paul's video ages ago about centrotecing normal bits. I have only just got around to trying it. Only took a minute and it works perfectly.

And also just realised Paul has changed his name on here. Good, he was getting a namecheck in my thanks thread (as are you) but I couldn't find him under his old moniker.

Do you know what, he probably was. Have "half inch shy" wedged in my head.
