Chaos Theory Cabinets

Your cabinets look great.  Did you use the Hafele connectors like in the Chaos wall?

Didn't use Hafele connectors, domino and glue.  The dis-advantage in doing it this way is you now have a very big and heavy box to move around, also meant that I couldn't use the common panel like they did in the video so I have more material ($$)

Anyone have a good source for the Hafele connectors here in the states?

Karl

I have had a few questions about the build and the cabinet dimensions.

Each cabinet is

2350mm tall
475mm deep
468mm wide

(sorry, I find using metric measurements easier and more accurate.  25.4mm to the inch for conversions)

Each sliding shelf for the tools is 406mm wide by 445mm deep, not including the wood trim on the fronts.

I used 3/4" 19mm material.

The slides are simple under-mount white epoxy 3/4 extension.  The shelves have to be deeper than the systainers to allow for part of the shelf not extending fully out of the cabinet.  The 3/4 extension slides are a fraction of the cost of a full extension slide but you
do have to make the cabinets deeper if you want to be able to fully open the lid on a systainer to access tools.  For me this was not an issue as I wanted the drawers and cabinets to be deeper for more storage room.

You can see in this photo how the shelf if longer than the systainer

Shelf without systainer, I just used a block of material screwed to the shelf to lock the systainer in place.

Drawers don't extend fully out of the cabinet but it is easy to access the back of the drawer.

I ended up using the end of the cabinet for Festool rail storage.

What type of Hafele connectors are normally used in this build?  The Rafix ones?

The original Festool German videos use Rafix and a common panel side being used in two cabinets.  I built with dominos and glue and did not use a common center panel. Each of my cabinets were stand alone cabinets.

Looks Great !

That is going to be my next shop organization project, how tall is the opening for the systainers?

thanks,

Lee

I will have to measure that but I think that it is about 42".  I'll check and post later.

The opening for the systainers is 1030mm and the opening for the bottom cabinet (systainers and the drawer) is 1200mm

Does anyone know what the German abbreviation Anz. means in English? It a title on Guido's cut sheet. Thanks!

Thank You!  On another note, has anyone built and used Mr. Henn's Hafele jig?  I've built it but its not clear to me as to how I can drill holes that are set back 63mm from edge (as per the plans for part #1 side walls for the back edge).  It seems to be fine for the holes that are 37mm from edge (part #1 side walls front edge).

In part 2 of the Chaos Theory videos Mr. Henn's bottom connector shelves show up with the Hafele connectors at both 37mm from the front and 63mm from the back but it doesn't illustrate how he drilled the 63mm connector holes.  Perhaps I need to build a second Hafele jig with the holes 63mm from the edge, i.e a part #3 that is 64mm wide vs 80mm.  Is there something very obvious that I am missing?

Thanks,
Joihn

so... while thinking of doing drawers for the systainers, i've been looking around for options for the hardware. For a 15x15x5 drawer, I can either do the festool way:
1) Sys-AZ Drawer (58.4 if i buy 5)
or
the ikea top of the line maximera, which uses the blumotion (30$)
- select from a myriad of drawer front. and i if want fancy, i can go with a 20$ one:http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/40285416/#/30285412

the price is almost identical, and i could be 10$ cheaper each if i go with some cheap drawer front. But ikea gets me the blumotion which have the soft close, i can open the drawer all the way.. and you know... other blum goodness.

festool is just... well you got the festool look. For those who used it, how does the opening and closing feel? solid?

I'm not as familiar with the current Ikea kitchen lineup, but this front looks like it might work.  I believe it's low profile and fits behind a door or another drawer front.

Thanks for sharing this!  I'm going to have to explore this next time I get to Ikea (Unfortunately, a two+ hour trip).

Thanks, Mike

Really liking this organization.  I often make my storage units larger too enabling storage behind the systainers.  One trick i've started using, is adding a domino at the back of the box rather than a larger piece of wood.  I don't glue the domino in, so that I can remove it and use the drawer for other storage if need be.

Nice clean, modern look, very functional and no sanding or finishing required. That's great!
