Cheap Trick

I have way too many lathe tools and remembering the grinder rest angles for each tool is way beyond my aged memory.

I have sharply reduced the number of angles I use on my scrapers (doesn't seem to matter to the wood) and I have made a very cheap setup gauge for each remaining angle.

When I think I have the perfect rest angle and distance from the rest to the grinder, I press an old credit card into the grinder wheel with the card bottom resting on the grinder rest. I thus get a perfect profile of the setup. I can quickly replicate the setup using the credit card to adjust the grinder rest. The card does leave some residue on the wheel's grit but it comes off after sharpening a tool or two. I do mark each card with the tool it goes with and which wheel it is to go with.

I'm using the Oneway Veri-grind system with DWAY wheels. This trick works with the DWAY wheels because their diamenter never chances with use.

I just hope my wife doesn't find out where her credit cards are going 😊.
