Cheaper and better alternative to the Festool Vac Y-adapter

Nilfisk makes this kind of wye adapter for a host of different companies (including Festool). A simple google search provides different options:

I have and use both. Haven’t really noticed any difference in performance between the two.

Appears that Fein has discontinued their version. Searching for the Fein part number brought up a Canadian merchant that might have it available.http://www.noahsmarine.com/itemdesc.asp?ic=69908030197

Might try E-Bay as well if you’re still wanting the Fein.

Not needing a fein but its cheap there just need to figure out shipping.

Check Grizzly.  They have lost their Festool distributorship and have a sale on the few Festool items they have left. Not much left, only 25 items and that 75" rail says not available (sorry) if you click on it.  I see they have Festool item 452898 antistatic Y adapter with plug for sale at $33, normal price is $44.  They have this listed under (their number) item T-30287.  However they get you on shipping.  Their shipping is based on $$ spent so under $50 is $9.99 shipping.  You can see the shipping rates on their website and pick through the Festool bones to see if you can find anything on sale you might want. 

Probably six weeks ago they had maybe 200 items on sale, but the sale was mentioned on FOG, and items disappeared quickly.

Added a welding helmet to get over $100 hoping for free shipping but shipping went up.

Grizzly's shipping rates are based on dollars spent.  It starts at $4.99 for orders up to $14.99, then $9.99 for orders up to $49.99 and tops off at $24.99 for orders over $300.  They had a 72 hr free shipping a few weeks ago, and the Festool items were pretty well drained then.  I know I picked a few items.  If you go to their site, at the bottom click on shipping, then shipping rates to see their table. So if you cannot find that Y at another dealer, their sales price makes up for the extra cost of the shipping charge.

There is one standard maintained amongst all the shop vacs/dust extractors out there and that's the ID of the throat on the vac itself. Shop vacs/dust extractors need to be able to accept the largest diameter hose available  which is 58mm (what Festool calls 56mm). So, yes, the wye will fit a Shop Vac brand vac.

When I bought my Grizzly dust collection system I ordered the ground wire too.  I installed in in the original setup but not for the extension from the table saw to the accessory table (for the Festool and the pocket hole jig).

I worked a summer job in a grain elevator and dust was a major issue (especially corn dust) because when there is a fire or explosion it rattles the building and all the dust falls down from where it had settled. Then you get the big explosion.

Now having said that I doubt a home shop could come close to those conditions. There were huge 2 or 3 foot diameter pipes with what looked like cloth coatings of dust on them and when they fell they could hurt you... like snow sliding off a roof...

$15,000 in 1971 is pretty hefty.  Heck gold was still set at $35 an ounce.  A corvette in 1973 was around $7500, a camaro less than $4000.  I graduated from college in 1976 and I remember someone going with one of the Big 8 accounting firms making $1000 a month-we were all in shock someone could make so much money.  So spending $15,000 would be like buying two corvettes today.  Must have been nice cabinets.

When I looked at the Y-adapter price tag recently... I was like "I'll just buy another vac". Still don't know what people would use it for though besides CMS / CS. And for that you might just as well get the special Y-hose.

There is also the Metabo 630897000, looks like less air resistance... and a lot cheaper. No cap. Anti-static unknown.... if not; add some alu or copper tape to it.
