I have a butler's pantry in my home that I'd like to extend and convert into a full bar area. I will need to custom build a bunch of cabinets to match the existing set. I've already matched the stain and poly in tests, but I need to pick up some cherry wood for the builds -- face frames and shaker doors, and maybe the odd end panel. Anybody know the best source in the northern VA/DC area to obtain the cherry wood? Thanks in advance...

I don't know much about NOVA but Alexander Brothers in Timberville has a great reputation for quality hardwoods and good service. I haven't worked with them but one the guys I know is good friends with Shea.

If you can drive a bit, there are some options:

Timberline Farm Sawmill - Sykesville, MD - limited hours
Fallen Lumber - Halethorpe, MD - by appointment
Camp Small - Baltimore, MD - by appointment
Freestate Timbers - Timonium, MD
Good Woods Lumber - Stewartstown, PA
Frank Thomas Sawmill - Fallston, MD
Groff & Groff - Quarryville, PA
Hearne Hardwoods - Oxford, PA

I've bought from all of these sources and the quality is very good to excellent. The largest (Groff & Hearne) have the greatest selection and services. The others are smaller operations so they have good selection and some services. Camp Small is a source that has some dried lumber but is a great place for logs and they will mill the logs for you - in fact, I'm heading there this afternoon to pickup a zelkova log they milled for me.

There's also Frederick Lumber in Frederick and Exotic Lumber in Annapolis.

You might try C. P. Johnson Lumber, 21457 Business Ct., Elkwood, VA 22718. (540) 825-1006. It's a nice drive. When I've been there, he had some very nice cherry in stock.
Another source might be Vienna Hardwoods, 2711 Dorr Ave., Suite K, Fairfax, VA 22031. (703) 255-9663.

I live in Falls Church and have a few local “I’ll never shop there again” places that I will not publicly post. Message me if you want them. One of the above mentioned businesses gave me one of the best experiences I’ve had and I’ll give them every bit of my business that I can from here on out.

Alexander Brothers is top notch. I was looking for figured ambrosia maple and they hooked me up with some beautiful stock! Everything I did was by phone and text pictures. They shipped the lumber at a rate that made it silly for me to consider driving. I’d love to visit them some time, but not until I need a lot of wood. I can’t recommend them highly enough.
