Child’s private space

My most ambitious project yet. My daughter has a very small bedroom so I made her an office in our open living area.
Uses 24, 18, 15 and 12mm birch ply. Whitewash exterior, polyurethane internally. Made in two halves to get through doors. All on wheels so it can be easily moved.

I am pleased with the 90 and 135 degree edge joints; they are very rigid and do not splay as I had feared. A few dominos may have been used.

Assuming the hand painting is by your daughter and not the missus I'm guessing this is for a fairly young one, the office looks awesome, but if I could make one very small criticism, I'd give a little round over to the sharp corners. It's unreal how often our kids when growing up would happen to hit the one sharp edge of ...(insert random object)!

Cute idea...nice execution.  [smile]  Love all the nice little touches like the under cabinet lighting and the little Tolomeo. The time & temperature gauges are also nice.

How did you join the sections together? Are those D8/D14 connectors?

I am glad someone appreciates the nice features - 8-year-olds don't always!

Yes, I have allowed for D8 connectors and the anchors are in place. I was concerned that the roof was just going to splay. I felt it was better to line things up while still disassembled. I also had four stainless steel bolts at the adjacent seat sides and one up in the shelf above the desk. As I assembled it out of position I left the connectors out. It is so rigid that I just rolled the whole thing into position and have not bothered with the connectors. I have since covered the little holes with the plastic caps.

I have the larger connectors, but they are too big for 24mm ply.

Bench, desk, desk struts and main shelf horizontals have rounded edges (only about 5mm radius). I guess because they are meant to be joined side-to-side I left crisper corners elsewhere. I agree that the corner of the over-desk shelf looks nasty. I did consider rounding it off... I'll have another look and talk to see if heads go anywhere near. Maybe make a little corner cushion thing that clips on.

This is the perfect forum for making observations / comments about such risks we may spot in each other's work. I made a comment on a storage box for a grandchild with what looked like a heavy lid which said child could easily fit into.

We have a lot of experience with sharp objects and kids, our first son walked on his toes so was prone to falling over in a mild breeze. We ended up having to remove almost all the furniture from the house, and put rubber strips over anything with an edge.

He of course while walking down the hall managed to trip himself up on the carpet, and hit the sharp edge of the door frame, came  up like a football on his noggin almost immediately.

Never occurred to me I'd have to worry about the door frames! The other kids weren't as bad, but would occasionally hit stuff, especially anything close to eye height we found. After 4 kids though you tend to learn that they bounce reasonably well so you're not as worried. But even so now with everything I do, I always anticipate someone possibly braining themselves on it in the most bizarre and unlikely circumstance! ;-)
