Chisels with cutting edge on side

Whats the sharp edge on the side of the blade used for?
I know it says "demolition use" but I can't see how it can be used for demolition.

About 40 years ago, a friend of mine decided to make his own knife from a 10” metal working file. 

All he did was grind one edge and the tip with a chisel profile.  No heat treating or forging. 

It was a rather robust knife.  It was still a fully functioning file with a nicer handle.  He probably used something like the Nicholson 10” smooth for this. 

He was very proud of his knife.

You hold the chisel pointing aggressively and threateningly at a demolition worker, then tell him "Demolish this, or you'll regret it" ..........

I have to say I think DeWalt "over did it" with the large and aggressively serrated edge part. There is a slight benefit to serrations when cutting rope/net, but if that needs to be done with a "universal chisel". ...

But the idea of an "EDC chisel" with added side edge to serve as utility knife isn't new.

Hultafors has been linked already. I'll throw the German brand "Kirschen" into the mix:https://www.kirschen.de/en/Special-chisels_p6.html?

I had one of these Kirschen 2-Cut years ago, but didn't use it much since I always have a knife on me anyway. Got rid of it.

I got me a couple of sizes from Hultafors EDC line without any additional edge for "rough use" instead.

I have that set, it's considered glazier's chisels to beat out heavy putty sets.  They were more common back in the day when commercial steel glazing was common and  often had one inch thick putty to chop out...good times  We used to stock five gallon buckets of white and grey putty.  Also, there used to be right and left versions.

Jokes aside, I bought this a few week back at a DeWalt road show with 30% off. It really works, I’ve used it when framing forcing lumber straight with the claw with one hand and screwing with the other hand. The hammer is actually well balanced and the grip and swing is really good. (I’m used to Estwing 20 and 16oz hammers..) which are my favourites with a reasonable price for a hobbyist.

Maybe he needs a pair of cut-resistant gloves while using?

He probably didn't consider the obvious when purchasing.

If your buddy can’t remember that one edge is sharp. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t let him anywhere near power saws  lol

Morning all, thanks for the comments.  I've never seen these type of things before, and neither has my mate in the office (who bought them in a Black Friday sale).

I think he's going to round the edge off with a grinder, or maybe relegate them to opening paint tins.
