Chop saw hood, make or buy

i know what you mean . on yer saws there is a dc port going from the top of the saw down into the back of the blade guard housing. on my saw (dw 718) there is a eliptical tube that is set into the casting bellow the rails. another eliptical tube is inside the first and is bolted to the head of the saw behind the pivot point. as the saw is pulled towards you the inside pipe can move through the outside one . this pipe is only roughly an  1.25 inchs by 3/4 inchs eliptical. i dont know if this is big enough for DC. any ideas on fitting a new port altogether

Looking at the photo on the DeWalt site, I see your dilema.  You might be able to mount a larger shroud around the dust inlet and combined with good suction from a dust extractor, may improve it dramatically.  I don't know why some of these manufacturers even include a bag with a SCMS.  There is no way that thing will have any meaningful use.  I bet it doesn't even get 5% of the dust!

thats the one , id say i only get 10 % with the ct 22 at full belt. i cant even find the bag as i carefully put it up safe so that i would know where it went [big grin]

Yes wonderwino's pic shows exactly where the mod needs to be made. That little scoop is not like what I had on the old model, but looks to have the exact same issue. So a scoop of some kind needs to be made at that point to funnel in the dust better.  :)

I used a piece of hard rubber off a huge stone quarry conveyor to make a scoop that attached and moved with the saw. If I remember correctly, the tricky part was getting it just right so you could still move the saw all the way to 60 degrees and not have the mod interfere with the movement for miter cutting.

That inlet is the point you need to work on to get the dust collection to work for sure. It seems DeWalt could fix this issue pretty simply with a small redesign of this area.

I am sure we can help you find a way to make similar for your saw and I know I read about a mod for this saw on the net somewhere.

i still cant find anything on the web about impoving the dc on this saw.i want the mod for use on site mos
