Hello all.  Recently aquired mft3 and its pretty gunked up.  Its got some sort of varnish or oil on the tracks and on the legs.  What would be safe chemical to use not to damage the paint and aluminum to clean this up?

Thank you

Paint thinner/mineral spirits won't hurt it but might not be strong enough.

I doubt that lacquer thinner/acetone would hurt the aluminum(unless the aluminum parts have a clear coat over them).  It's much stronger than mineral spirits.  But don't use laquer thinner/acetone on the powder coated legs.

My favorite is 3M Adhesive Remover.  It might work for that, especially the painted legs, but it's a bit pricey.  It is very safe to use on auto type painted surfaces.

I'll give it a try.  i tried lacquer thinner and scotchbrite (green) on the legs on a small area and it started to take paint off so i stopped.

Vegetable oil, if left on the surface for 10 - 12 hours will generally soften any gummy residue.  If the oil is left on overnight, generally the residue is removed when the oil is wiped off.

Unfortunately, this will only work on horizontal surfaces as the oil will drip off fairly quickly.

The resolution is to slather on mayonnaise, which is about 80% vegetable oil.  Try a small section.  Leave the mayo overnight.  Wipe clean, then use soapy water to remove the mayo residue. (Windex, or any other glass cleaner works fine.)

The mayo is benign to most surfaces, but test on an inconspicuous area first.

Most refrigerators have an open jar of mayo, so no purchase is generally required for testing purposes.  I have found that the best tool for the application is usually my fingers.  Luckily it cleans off easily.

Oh ye I remember your recommendation on mayo . Thank you

Does the presence of this gunk annoy you more than the idea of coating it in mayonnaise?

You don't leave the mayonnaise on permanently  [big grin]

Yes, but even just putting it on combined with the small after xx hours.

3M adhesive remover worked great on legs, and for the most part on aluminum extrusions.  only remaining stuff is deep inside the bottom of the v grooves and hard to get there

Most of these suggestions would have me move the MFT outside before treating.

Thats what I did.  also took the top off and gave it a good wash with dawn soap.  that got most of the stuff out and followed up by 3m. defintely looks good enough to use.  Now on to the mobile base for it to get rid of the wobbly legs
