If I am using the Festool Cleantec VA CT 20 do I need to have a filter bag in my extractor also? The bags are expensive and they only collect fine dust which decreases the units suction. Thanks for your help.

It's either put a filter back in the extractor or constantly change the filter.  The bag does more than just hold dirt, it's a pre-filter for the HEPA filter, which is significantly more expensive than the bags in most cases.

Most people have found that the amount of dust making it to the filter bag is quite low and bag changes are much less frequent once the CT-VA 20 is in place, depending on how the extractor is being used and what it's being used for.

I would never use the CT without a filter bag.

If you don't, your HEPA filter will get clogged, and the suction will suffer.  You'll also have to replace the filter more often (and it's expensive).

I wouldn't think of the CT-VA as a way to do away with the bag, but as something that extends the bag's (and HEPA filter's) life.  When I'm using my CT-VA, my bag lasts a loooong time.
