CMS Raised Panel Bit Question

I saw the video Festool has on the CMS using a vertical raised panel bit it was very informational. I'm assuming that would be the preferred method used but all of my raised panel bits are horizontal. So i was wondering if any of you guys use horizontal bits with the CMS with OF1400? I chucked one up but CMS ring for the OF1400 leaves very little room for the bit. I could always use another router table i have but i am itching to use my CMS so any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!!!

The router bit opening with the 1400 has little if any clearance for a "normal" size horizontal bit with all the plastic covers removed  The 1400 is a fabulous router but the horizontal bits are pushing the limits.  Of course if you decide to try a horizontal bit the speed should be turned down to the slowest speed on the router.  A vertical bit allows the bit to be run at a higher speed.

Yes, I've done it in the past with 3 1/2" panel-raising bits in my OF1400 on a CMS table. The trick is to stick a sacrificial thin piece of plywood on top of the CMS table to overcome the ring clearance problem. You are basically raising the surface of the table to surround the bit which sits above the CMS plate.

I've discussed this before in other threads but I'm sorry, I can't remember which offhand.

I did this a couple of months ago and had to use a sacrificial fence (in order to push the material out some) because I couldn't lower the bit and because the opening in the fence barely accommodates the bit.  I had the 1400 turned all the way down and made multiple passes.  Even doing it that way the bit bogged down and I had to shut the router off and let it sit for 5-10 minutes.  It was far from optimal and honestly made me regret picking up the CMS.  I don't do a lot of raised panels but had I know these limitations beforehand I probably would've stuck with my old setup.
