Coming to grips with my vises...

Bought one on FBM yesterday. Needs a base, but otherwise the vintage I wanted at a great price.

Arrived this morning

Appears to work fine, I thought it might need more refurbishing, but only a little cleaning.

I also like that when you clamp something in the jaws, it also locks the swivel base.  I suppose that is obvious, but nice surprise for me.

Now I will work on some temporary bases next week.

Here are pictures of the mount I made.    Next step is to make some jaw inserts.

Sweet and simple. Welcome to the brotherhood... [member=44099]Cheese[/member]  [big grin]

You'll be amazed how often you use it sideways with something long hanging over the edge.

RE: jaw inserts, glue some cork rubber to magnetic sheet, works great in those long jaws.

Here is my first cut at a set of jaw inserts.    Magnets work quite well to hold them in place.

Hey  [member=8712]Richard/RMW[/member]

Another one bites the dust

And another one gone, and another one gone

Hey, I'm gonna get you too

Bob, I really like mine for sheet metal forming, the long jaws allow for a lot of versatility. And to reinforce what Richard said, there are just so many times I turn the vise on its side to hold something vertical. Versa Vise...a title well earned.

Been looking for one of these beauties for a while now. Starrett #86. Catalog is over $400, acquired this for considerably less.

[attachimg=2]

After years of using vise grips or fingers to hold stuff being worked on disk or belt grinder this will be really nice to have. The handle is missing but should be pretty simple to whomp one up.

This is what a new one w/ the handle looks like.

[attachimg=3]

It's offered on eBay for $415.

There is a really beautiful 10" bench vise on ebay right now:

I finally snagged a float lock vise, need to make the mounting bracket but that's a fun project.

Guess this qualifies as a vise, it's certainly a vice.  [cool]

[member=25351]rst[/member] I have that exact mitee-grip vice and have set it up to drop in on a bench with MFT holes in it.  What I did is like a shooting board made a detachable piece that attaches with dowels and magnets that is the same height to act as a rear support for longer boards. It works shockingly well for planing edges.

Nathan, I think you’re mistaking me for RMW, I have a lot of vises (and vices) but not that one,

Besides, it'll headline in the future estate sale... [member=44099]Cheese[/member]  [poke]

That's funny because when I saw your post yesterday, I was going to add some smart remark about another item for the estate sale to keep the fishing flies company.  [big grin]

I think that Mitee-Grip is very  [cool]  Richard.

I Googled it and found one that was offered by Blackburn Tools back in 2011. I'd attach a couple of dogs to the bottom and be able to place it anywhere in the entire work bench field.

Something similar to this.
