Connecting Festools to my wife's Dyson vac!

I am just a hobbyist that builds A&C furniture in a shop on the 2nd floor of my house over the garage.  For dust collection of my Festools I have a CT Mini with a UDD.  The UDD is great but it makes it a challenge to move the Mini around the house when I have the typical array of homeowner projects to do. 

However, my wife has a nice little canister style Dyson vacuum ;D  What I did was to take one of the vacuum hose adapters, that is found on the internet and ebay, put it on a spindle and reduce the diameter of the hose end of the adapter in my lathe until it had a nice, snug fit in a Dyson hose end.  Simple project but it gives me a nice option to still keep the house clean with a lot less effort than moving my Festool vacuum.  Just don't tell my wife!  [wink]

Since I just recently started buying festool products this is exactly how I have been collecting dust. Luckily I scored a festool dust extractor during the recon sale so my wife can finally have her Dyson back.

The dyson is essentially full of mini cyclones.

Before I bought my CT I had an old Dyson drag along (DC-02) which was used for all small tool suction. It worked brilliantly as long as you keep the filters clean IAW the Dyson instructions. They do not like drywall/plaster dust though.

When I first got my CT and discovered how much the bags cost per month I used to make the bags do 3 goes (empty to full) by using the Dyson with the nozzle going into the CT bag in order to empty the bag for the next go. I do not recommend this as I noticed that after the 2nd emptying the bags were becoming discoloured on the outside which is a sure sign that very fine particles were penetrating the bag.

I contacted Dyson and asked if they were interested in woodworkers and got a firm but polite "no".

You would think that the cyclone design of today's home vacuums would be ideal for shop vacuums.  The way it is implemented in home vacuums seems to be much more compact than the large cyclones you see in 4" dust collectors or even the smaller units such as Oneida has for the UDD.  Since every manufacturer of home vacuums is using these today I expect that the patents have expired and the cost of adding them is minimal. 

I would think that given the cost of dust bags for the CT, a system that minimizes the number of bags used would have a great benefit over the lifetime cost of the unit.

The Festool long life bag is probably the simplest answer for most people. My friend uses one in his CT and he is delighted with its effectiveness and relatively low cost spread over the time that he has had it. It will also not void your Festool warranty unlike a normal Dust Deputy.
