contemporary coffee table in quilted maple and sapele

This is a small version of the table I built a year ago in curly. Finished this week and is going to ship out on Monday. I brought it home to take the pics.

Quilted maple and saple, I made my own veneer this time cuz I've got a big bandsaw now.  ;D. The curved corners on the lower section are mdf with a 1/16" thick veneer. much easier than the stave corners I built for the last table.

The drawers are operated with touch latches and open with a slight push. They are hard maple with a 5/32 sapele veneer on the fronts.

I wasnt 100% satisfied with the grain match of the top but I dont think I could have done better unless I surfaced another 100bf looking for the best match. Next time I will cut bookmatch veneers for the top. I guess I will be looking for a vacuum bag in the future.

The finish is 4 coats valspar zenith precat gloss with the final coat sanded to 2000 platin and rubbed out with 0000 steel wool. Im sure the 4000 platin would have worked but I didnt have any on hand. Platin is some great stuff for finishes guys!

Festools used on the project were the OF1010, ETS150, and the C12.

man is that quilted hard to work.

if you pack it well anyone can ship it. Its only going 400 miles so ups gets it. Cross my fingers. UPS insurance is going to cost 2 per 100 in value. That adds up super fast.

UPS shipped my music stands no problem.

I think I would like to add a mid size table in this design aswell. maybe a 30x48~ mid size. Im still up because I just got back from a trip to the ER. No worries Im going to be fine. 3hrs Id have rather spent in bed though.

what was the drawer construction, it looks like the maple front is tounged to the side with matching veneered front

are they false dovetails, interesting anyway.

The dovetails are not false as they go thru the sides and glued into fronts about 1 1/2".

The notches where cut into the corner blocks before assembling the lower section on the tablesaw using the BCT kerfmaker. The notch was extended thru the maple after the corners were glued in using a flush trim bit on my DW625. I repeated that sequence on the top by clamping the top to the lower section and cutting the notches. The legs are also notched on the table saw and again the BCT kerfmaker really made this a breeze.

Very nice indeed!  I can see where the quilted maple would be extremely hard to get a good grain match but very nice none the less.
