Conturo - Resale Value?

I am not sure who's buying them, but 75% for a used item doesn't make much sense to me especially when festoolrecon sells them for 80% with a warranty.  I am having this discussion right now over some used, out of warranty items whose owners want 75% for them.

I just won't pay that.  I'd rather buy new items for full price or reconditioned items for 80%.

I'd buy a working, out-of-warranty Domino, CT, or CXS for a higher percentage of retail than I would a working, out-of-warranty Kapex or Conturo.

There's always a buyer at almost any price, it's just a matter of how long it takes to find that buyer.

I think there's something else to point out for Darren.  That is, a MFK was mentioned along with the Conturo, which is good, but note that the fence on the KA-65 is about 6"-8" deep (can't remember off the top of the my head).  It's deep enough that drawer parts will either need to be double sticked down over jig/plate that's cantilevered off your workbench (the KA-65 also drops downward pretty far), or you have something like a vacsys.  The table is meant to address that, but since it wasn't mentioned, I figured it'd be good to cross your t's and dot your i's and mention it for you.  I also figured you weren't buying your drawers here.

i was in the same boat and was considering the aliexpress "edge banding machine" instead. they go for a few hundred cdn and seem like a reasonable risk. they are mostly the same construction with some hand held options
the glue pellets is the biggest question if you don't have access to Richelieu ; and what quality is the one you can get on amazon or china
ended up with a free freud edgebander but it's for iron on only. i'm going to try and stay as far away as i can from hot melt edge banding projects

Hi All,

In Nova Scotia there is a 15 % sales tax.  If I advertise a used tool at 75 % of retail, a consumer is saving 40 %.  A businessperson can get the sales tax back, so not as enticing.

I am about to list my Carvex for sale as I bought a new Mafell jigsaw.

The only Festool I haven’t been able to sell is the new in box Connector kit for the DF 500.

The renting of tools sounds interesting.

Thanks all.

Brian

This is a huge consideration.  Not only is my tax rate less than half, but there are authorized festool dealers in the US who will not charge me tax or shipping so the MSRP is the total I pay.  Buying used on ebay costs me tax and usually shipping too so it is not a level playing field.

Those are some very good points!
I found that up to about 6" width you can get by utilizing horizontal clamps as long as you can clamp near a workbench edge. For narrower pieces of 2"-6" width (but with enough length!) I got away by simply installing the second roller and freehanding it by facing the machine towards you and butt it up against some positive stop (or just clamp it down lightly). With a bit of practise that worked surprisingly well. That approach goes out the window once you have any parts shorter than the Conturo baseplate.

I eventually succumbed to the pressure of getting the table mount (custom table) because i ended up doing more and more fiddly stuff like drawers or skirting pieces and now I do most of my work stationary. Because who would have thought: it's actually incredibly handy [big grin]

Just to jump in on the original question a week late...
I struggled with he exact question(s) the OP raises.
My decision came down to the fact that the job the conturo  does far exceeds the quality I can get with iron-on , Fast cap tape , or spray . I already had the MFK700, which was a massive time saver. I am in eastern Canada , and the Conturo and table kit (I bought the fixture, but not the whole table) was extremely expensive -- but i justified it on my own job. My wife is very picky, so the Conturo allows me to match or exceed the cabinetry company's work quality. We had a quote of 55K for the kitchen remodel (admittedly includes tops and some refit) , 18K for our walk-in closet, and 22K for our cottage. I did the closet for 2.8K in material and consumables, the cottage for 2.2K in material and hardware, and will finish our kitchen for 4.2K (for the cabinets) .
My own jobs paid for the machine.
In our cottage, we went with a modern melamine slab door, which really saved money, as i normally use pre-made doors sourced here locally.  The Conturo simply has a quality finish that i havent seen matched at any level when it comes to melamine.

So i have 5700 invested in the tool and table , another 900 in the mfk700, and 400 in the flush trimmer. The time saving in these tools also need to be taken into account.  I monitored my time very closely comparing to spray on adhesive/ iron-on, and using fast cap trimmers.
I did a comparable job to my closet in 2018. The difference was staggering. it was almost 2 full days back then in edge banding and trimming. With the new tools i figure i can do this in 2.5 - 3 hours.
