Converting HL-850 Planer to metric

I'm curious about what actually gets measured on a scale with this particular tool...

I have the 850 and never paid much attention to the scale. If I am looking for a certain depth of cut, I trial and error on scrap.

Not sure, but I believe the part you need to replace is 31 on the parts diagram. If I'm right, the metric version is part number 715053, and it is described as a "Cam". This is the only part in the vicinity that has a new part number, compared to the metric version.

Hopefully you can get into that area by removing the screws in part 35, but I haven't done this.

I’m with Birdhunter on this. I’ll plane stock and check it using calipers. Same for tasks like slot routing where the depth of cut is super-critical. I make test cuts and check the depth manually, and then make whatever micro-adjustments are necessary. I think it probably all stems from tools I was using 30 years ago whose gauges were little more than guesswork.
