So what's the best technique to use an OF-1400 router to route a dutchman or a butterfly key?  I suppose I could use the included bottom plate that's compatible with Milwaukee-style template bushings, but perhaps there are drawbacks to that technique.

Is it better to just buy two Festool copy rings based on the size of the router bit?  That'd limit you to metric router bit sizes, yes?  I wasn't able to find a lot of good info on the Festool web site, and I haven't been able to come up with a clever enough search string here.

So I'll ask.  And maybe win a CXS.  Thanks for your attention!  : )

If you already have, or prefer, the Porter Cable bushings, just use them.  I use them a lot on my OF1400.  The only disadvantage is that, just like on a non-Festool router, a lot of vibration will loosen the nut - so you need to test it every now and then to be sure its tight.

The formula for router inlay is

You use two sets of bushings to create the male and female parts.

The bushing/bit pair offset is

  OFF = (bushing OD-bit dia)/2

The forumula for inlay pairs is

OFFfemale = OFFmale + bit diametermale

I use the whiote side  inlay busing and router bit.... for the keys and it worlked just fine...
