Could There Be An Issue With Storing Batteries in Systainer?

I've been keeping some of my battery chargers (DeWalt, Skil and Makita) in an M137 Sys3 Systainer, along with some 12v and 20v batteries fully charged (the Festool batteries and chargers are in their individual systainers). Whenever I open the systainer, I sense an "electronics" aroma and this makes me wonder if it is indeed safe to keep batteries in the Systainer?

Any thoughts?

I avoid closing the lid after having just used the chargers or batteries until they're close to ambient temp, but it's absolutely safe to store them in a systainer.

Because they have such a close fitting lid, it's just letting the normal lingering plastic/electronic smell remain built-up in the enclosure.

You sure about that smell ? I never heard of that.

I have read that the bigger risk to batteries is while charging them. So I try to be present while charging them, or at least sit the charger in the middle of a bare concrete basement slab if I have to leave it unattended.

And then I store the batteries separately from the tool --- in steel boxes mounted on a drywall wall, close to a smoke detector. I used ammo boxes, and added a divider in them, so I get two batteries per box.

OK, I admit it, I am a little OCD.

Not going to write a blank check on the “all good” end of things, but: I have chargers and batteries that do emit some of this typical “electronics smell” - also have some tools with exposed circuit boards inside the battery connector that do emit that smell.

So far I haven’t seen or observed anything with those batteries, chargers & tools that would worry me or lead me to believe there might be a problem or any danger imminent.

Be aware, keep an eye on it from time to time, but I don’t think you have anything to worry about.

If there was something funky going on, the smell is very different from that typical “electronics smell”, the fumes are much “sharper” and easily make your eyes water.

Kind regards,
Oliver

A faint plasticky-electronic smell is normal and nothing to worry about generally, especially with anything power related like high current chargers that parts of the internal circuitry can get quite warm affecting the surrounding materials. It's the acrid or burnt type smell that gives away somethings gone amiss.

Thanks all. I should note that the smell I get is more like the "plasticky-electronic" smell that luv mentions. And I don't know if I was clear, I'm only keeping the chargers and batteries in the systainer after charging, so no charging is going on inside the systainer.

Just wanted to check in because I don't want to be causing an issue I wasn't aware of.
