Coulumbus Ohio Woodworking Show

I plan to go, most likely on Friday.  If you have not watched him before, Marc Sommerfeld gives excellent demonstrations on building cabinets, frame and panel cabinet doors, and cabinet doors with glass lights.  Of course, he is promoting his own line of tooling.

Yeah...he promoted it pretty good about three years agao....I have most of it :)  I have used that technique more than once to build a cabinet after watching his demonstration. 

I am glad to hear that you will be attending the show on Friday.  That is the day that I will be there as well Dave.  It might be nice to shake hands? 

I like going to this show.  I hope to "graduate" from this class and head to the show in Atlanta.  Have you ever been?
 
I'll be going to the one in Indianapolis, probably on Jan. 31., any one else going to be there?

I don't think I will be making that show...my wallet can only take so much abuse!  You should make a trip to Columbus....that way you can stop at Woodwerks before you do as they put on a show of their own that same day.
 
You have to go to the WoodWerks show if you want to see the Festool rep.  I'm going to the show at the fairgrounds (maybe Saturday) and might go to WoodWerks show too - they don't have much parking.  I think I liked it better when WoodWerks was a part of the woodworking show.

Why did they split that up and why have them on the same day? Seems counter productive.

I did not know that they used to be a part of the show.  I only attended my first show there 3 years ago.  I am certain I would like that better if they had it all together.  Festool has only been selling at Woodwerks for a little over two years there...correct?  Or no?  I believe that Woodwerks has a 10% sale on that day...not sure on what all they do that on.  I have not received their flyer yet this year.
 
Thanks Barry. I could probably swing it that weekend, but that would be a hell of a drive. I've never heard of the woodwerks show either.

I do remember about two years ago I went to Indy show, and I seen several vendors. One vendor caught my eye, and it was the inventor of the Jooltool. It's a nice sharpening system. The girl that invented it is hot too, but beyond that I didn't go home and tell my wife how hot she was I guess, because a few weeks ago I seen her on Cool Tools show on the DIY network. I was telling my wife how I seen her there, and how she takes a black magic marker to mark the area she is going to sharpen, and then it happened. I got the comment about "isn't she just so smart" in a sarcastic tone, and I guess I got myself in trouble, and made her jealous.
 
Oh that was real smart.  You will know better next time.  But that's good to know...I will be looking at sharpening booths even though I am not in the market for that.  They will have a finishing seminar...I will be interested in that.  I liked the "Dubby" I think...miter fence system.  I want to take a look at that as well.  I really do wish Festool would have a showing there.  I will probably stop at Woodwerks first before the show to see what Festool brings to the event there.

WoodWerks was at the first woodworking show I attended, but I can't remember how many years ago that was.  They said it wasn't worth the money and time they had to spend on moving so much to the fairgrounds, so they decided just to start having their own show.  Their show sale is 10% off MOST everything in the store, excluding Festool of course. :-\  I think that you're right in that they've been selling Festools about two years now, I know I've talked to a Festool rep at the last two shows anyway.
Last year did you feel the woodworking show wasn't quite as good as the years before?  It seemed to me that there were fewer dealers and the prices were about the same as if you ordered from a catalog or internet.  I think Rockler was at WoodWerks instead of the woodworking show too.

Agreed.  The show was not as good as prior years but a bad day at a woodworking show is better than a good day at work eh?  Rockler is now a "sub store" inside of Woodwerks.  Probably why they have their show there now.  We are still looking forward to going...makes for a good day out.
 
I also agree that the Jan 2008 show was not as good as the previous year, but I still found plenty of products and demonstrations of interest.  I bought some router bits, some Snappy quick change bits and such, and my PC 7518.  The latter was a better price than any other I had found near that time.  The Snappy booth had a greater variety of their products than are normally available at Woodcraft.  There is no Rockler's in NE Ohio, the Cleveland area store closed this past Summer/Fall.

I didn't know the Cleveland Rockler store closed.  It's been a while since I've been there, I usually go after I stop at Berea Hardwoods.  I occasionally make it down to the Rockler in Cincy.

The only things I don't like about Rockler being in WoodWerks is that they're not open much on weekends (just Saturday mornings) and, since it's a brand that WoodWerks carries, the Rockler sale prices don't apply.

Well Barry, did you buy anything?  I ended up with an Incra t-square and a Bosch Colt.  I thought I was getting a better deal on the Colt that what it was - ended up just $5 less than Amazon.  Is it just me or did you also notice that quite a few vendors had attractive young women working for them?  I didn't notice it last year, maybe it's a new way to make more sales. ;)
I didn't make it to WoodWerks, did you?  I saw that, according to Festool's website, the rep wasn't going to be there until Sunday.  I still might go over, but probably not since I spent some money at the other show.

I did make it to both places.  I am sorry we did not coordinate getting together.  We won't let that happen on the next one!  I was fortunate enough to pick out of the crowd a couple of other folks from our community here.  Dave Ronyak and Wayne Nagle (Thanks to Wayne's avatar!).  Before I go any further I want to quickly point out and let it be known to all that Wayne had the opportunity to view Dave's entertainment center project and was quick to point out that it was actually a Sauder pre-fabbed unit that Dave slapped together :)

There...now that we got that straight...congrats on the Bosch Colt!  I like that router.  Did you happen to see the plunge base that Micro Fence had set up for the colt?  You may want to check that out. 

On the women.....uh...yeah...noticed.  There was a huge crowd by the guy doing the crown molding...he asked a question out of the audience...don't remember what....and only a couple people responded...he said "Are you kidding me?  Only a couple?  You must all be here to watch my exciting presentation!"  ....I said...."Yeah...that's what they are here for...wouldn't have anything to do with that cashier...."

I did make it to Woodwerks....spent almost two hours with the Festool rep....didn't learn too much but he did use the RO150 to finish a board....went through the grits to polish...made me smile knowing that beast is in my garage :) 

I did get a few things...I picked up a Dubby mitre sled...actually my better half had it in her hands before I could say anything...she's off on a picture frame mission now I think.  Hey...she bought me a boom arm for Christmas...she can do whatever she wants!  I still may work out a deal on an Incra down the road...Wayne? :)

I am headed back to the show today...girls all want to turn more pens....which is it??  Pens or picture frames?!  Make up your mind!

Oh...and for the record....Dave really isn't a big fat cheater...it was a pleasure meeting both Dave and Wayne!

Columbus Show...

Dave's write up on the Sauder book case was really impressive... I still think he deserves the prize!!! :D  And if you stand back 4-5 hundred feet it still looks really nice!

Dave's shop was pretty neat and clean... and I got to take a look at some of his many other pieces... Very Nice work Dave on all fronts.  I only picked a up a few small things at the show.  One thing was the carter guide for scrolling cuts on the band saw.  I've always looked at it but never knew anyone who used it.  Seeing it at the show helped me decide to ty it.  The guy cut a 5/8" diameter circle with a quarter inch blade in 3 1/2 inch thick pine.  Might make me wanna try some band saw boxes.

All in all, the show was fine.  My first one in Columbus, so I don't have much to compare it too, but I thought some of the presentations were more like a carnival atomsphere trying to sell.  Others were very good.  Summerfelds booth, microfence, jointec, festool, and a few others were very informative.  Woodwerks was pretty cool.  I'lll defitately make some trips there in the future.

Dave Ronyak and I road down together...had a few meals and talked woodworking.  Dave's a class act!  And It was nice meeting Barry and his better half as well.  He is a bit taller than me!  So it was nice when he picked me up a couple times to see over the crowd.  I'd like to go back today and spend some more time at the show, but I think I'll stay in Akron.
 
What can I add to what Barry and Wayne said??  Amy (Barry's "better half") treated me nice.  Sauder furniture, indeed!  Actually, we had a good time meeting one another and discussing various tools on display at the shows.  Overall, I liked the Woodwerks store experience at least as much as the WW Show.  They're just different.  Woodwerks had the best and most comprehensive display of Festool products I have ever seen in USA or Berlin (where I went about a year ago to a commercial builder's tool supply store).  At the WW Show I met the presidents of both Woodpeckers and iTech (JoinTech) and we talked some shop and tool ideas.  I hope we can do it again next year!!

The story about the guy selling the crown molding jig made me laugh - I heard him say the exact same thing when I was there! :D :D  The only difference was 4 people answered whatever he asked.  I didn't have the $$ for the microfence, but it looks like a nice product.  I was looking at one of the new Fein multimasters, but since their patent ran out I thought I would wait and see what the other manufacturers come out with (saw the Bosch and Dremel tools).

WoodWerks has to be one the best woodworking stores I've visited.  I bought most all my stationary tools from them.  I was surprised when I went to their first show and saw just how many factory reps they had there.  I agree that if you're hoping to find a Festool product in stock, WoodWerks is the place to go first.  I'd go over more often but they usually close around 5 or 6 and are only open Saturday mornings.

Glad you guys had a good time and maybe we'll see each other next year.
