I'm just started a small company doing higher end carpentry. I have a client who hired my to finish a job that a company took off on half way through. It was pretty high end basement remodel every door was custom, all the trim was custom milled, it was really a dream job. Always had a check ready, never questioned the price. He called me last week and asked if I was interested in doing a kitchen remodel for a client of his, I said of course. His client called me and told me they just bought the house and they would like to have some tile redone, some trim replaced, a few new doors, and are looking to have the kitchen remodeled in the next few months. I told them I would have to look at it I would be there saturday.
I get to there house with a sub he's fully insured does great work for very reasonable, I don't do tile but he does. The job totally changed, priority #1 is adding safety nets over four banister through out the home to insure that there son could not climb over and fall. I told her that I'm a carpenter by trade and I really don't do that kind of stuff, but what I could do is remove the banisters and replace them with euro style cabinets and some sort of counter top, and add shelving from the countertop to ceiling with a open back. Not only is this getting weird but she's starts pressing me for prices. Then starts asking me about doing a hidden room. I tell her I can get you ruff numbers monday but there going to be ruff. She asks what I normally charge for tile work my buddy tells her it would be between $5-$6 a sq ft. She says quick lowes will do it for $4 a ft.
Sunday comes I get three txt messages from her all pictures of nets at some playhouse. I txt her back I'm not really comfortable doing it, and it's not what I do.
Monday night my buddy comes buy I write out a estimate for everything, as far as the netting goes I put that I would need a lawyer to draw up something saying that I would be relieved of all liability. We she took as I would do it. Today she called to tell me she would have her lawyer who's probably the same guy who recommended me draw up a waiver.
I ended up emailing her that my insurance would not cover me, which I am sure is true. I hope it works!!!!
This really disturbed me for a few reasons one we inspect or lanyards and harnesses before we put them on. I can't imagine a couple who is so irresponsible that they feel that they need some sort of netting to keep there kid safe, would be responsible enough to inspect any sort of netting regularly. Not only that the lowes comment, the txt messages, wanting pricing right away, everything just rubs me way the wrong way. Any how I'am starting next monday, wish me luck!
I'am joking
It could be worse my old man looked at a job and told me the lady seemed nuts and he thought he would never get paid. So he told the lady he couldn't do it, I guess she flipped about it and a couple days later called the police and told them that he broke in and stole her computers. Nothing ever came from it. I just can't believe how much of a headache its been and I didn't even do any work. Just wanted to vent thanks for reading.
