Crown/cornice design question

I'm taking down the crown in our front room and replacing it with a different profile that's a little larger. I have trimmed out the windows with a cornice, as pictured, and plan to do the same thing with the front door.  My question is this: should I start the crown with the return on the left side of the cornice above the door or should I start it to the left of the door and have it return into the wall just short of the corner?

To the corner. Instead of a 90º corner (2 -45º cuts) Do a corner using 4-22.5º cuts. It will look much nicer than the 45's.

Aesthetically speaking I would finish with the cornice top edge/ceiling point of return in line with the outside edge of the handrail.
If the cornice is small enough to clear the handrail by say an inch, then take it to the corner and return from there.
Just my take on it though.

Agreed. If I understand your question...? But how much larger of a crown are you putting up and what is the design?

Thanks for the replies.  I will follow your suggestions and take it to the handrail.  Tim, the crown is a different profile and is 1.5" larger. I've already run it around the  redone kitchen and living room.  I like the profile a lot more and the size is a better fit for our 9' ceilings.
