CTL 26 E AC says poof -> Could use some repair advise

So, a few days ago I turned on the vacuum to clear some debris left after cutting PVC.  No such luck though. It just said poof and a nasty smelling cloud of white smoke came out of the front grille of my CTL 26. Luckily I managed to inhale only a very small amount of it, because it reminded me immediately of blown capacitors and I know that stuff can be carcinogenic.

Today I opened up the body of the vacuum, expecting to find a blown capacitor, but I didn't. As a matter of fact, everything looks just fine. No residue of obviously broken parts can be seen at all. The only part I couldn't get at was the motor itself. All other parts seem to be OK. I couldn't figure out how to open up the housing any further to get to the motor. I did remove the 6 screws on the other side of the black plastic moulding, but I can't find any other screws related to the motor housing.  I don't see any obvious seams where the cover of the motor can come apart from the rest of the body either.

Has anyone any advise for me on how to proceed? I would appreciate it very much, as I don't want to replace a whole machine just for one broken part.

Is that a 120V CTL E AC?
I (not me, but let's assume it is) have a 230V CTL E (no AC) that has the same symptoms. Some arcing and white smoke when switching on, then dead. There might have been some water ingress onto the switch.

Did you do the smell test? Mine smells the nastiest at the potentiometer that sits directly behind the main switch. That controls between on and auto mode.

The output to the motor, the two fatter wires up top aren't getting 230V either. I measure 33V (with motor disconnected).

The good thing is that they epoxied (?) in the entire PCB, preventing failures. The bad thing is that when it fails it's harder to fix.

Ouch, that's sloppy of me. I see now I never followed up on this post. My apologies for that.

I never managed to find out which part broke. But I called Festool and they asked me to send it in. 2 Weeks later I received a repaired machine back. I had to pay for the shipping costs and the replaced part. All in all it cost me about €150. A new machine would have cost me much more, so you won't hear me complaining. The machine has been fine since then.

Yeah that page mentions the 30Vac, similar to the 33 Vac I mentioned.

I at first suspected the rotary switches because the resistance across it's range seemed off. Scratched off a lot of epoxy. Never found an obvious broken part. Gave up and ordered original replacement part.
